The Beginnings of Professional Football

It all started with the Cincinnati Reds. In 1867, an organization called the Cincinnati Athletic Club formed the first professional football team. The Reds were followed by the Allegheny Athletic Association and the Latrobe Athletic Association, both of which were formed in Pennsylvania in 1892. The Latrobe team, which was mostly made up of players from Carnegie Mellon University, is believed to be the first team to use uniforms and play by strict rules.

On November 12, 1892, William “Pudge” Heffelfinger became the first professional football player when he was paid $500 to play for the Allegheny Athletic Association in a game against the Pittsburgh Athletic Club. Professionalism in college football began to erode following Heffelfinger’s payment, and by 1910 most colleges had abandoned professional football players on their rosters. Amid stunning revelations of bribery and corruption in college football, several schools dropped the sport entirely.

Yale University allowed players to receive expenses for missed class time and out-of-town games as early as 1872, and by 1892 was paying some players up to $150 per season. However, these payments were gifts from wealthy alumni rather than slush funds dispensed by the school administration.

In conjunction with his duties as Allegheny’s head coach, Phil King also served as the team’s manager responsible for scheduling games and paying the expenses of the visiting team. Since many of Allegheny’s opponents were also paying their players, King had to find creative ways to finance his team’s payouts without getting caught. One common method was known as “double days,” in which two games would be scheduled on the same day in different cities so that players could earn wages for both contests.

The first professional football team was the Allegheny Athletic Association, formed in 1890. The team, based in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, was made up of mostly former college players and played against other amateur and semi-pro clubs. In 1892, the team joined the Professional Football Association, which was formed to help standardize rules for the growing sport. The Allegheny Athletic Association began paying some of its players during this time, becoming the first professional football team to do so.
