The 1966 NFL Championship Game
In what is considered one of the finest NFL games ever played, the Packers and the Cowboys met for the NFL Championship on January 1, 1967. The game was a rematch of their Week 10 encounter, which Green Bay had won 34-27. With the championship on the line, these two powerhouses went head-to-head in a battle that would come to be known as the “Ice Bowl.”
With temperatures dipping to -13 degrees Fahrenheit and a wind chill factor of -48 degrees, it was the coldest NFL game on record. Fans watched as these two teams slugged it out in what turned out to be a defensive struggle.
The Cowboys held a 14-10 lead going into halftime, but the Packers came back strong in the second half. Quarterback Bart Starr capped off a 68-yard drive with a one-yard touchdown plunge to give Green Bay a 17-14 lead with just over five minutes remaining in the game.
The Cowboys responded with a drive of their own, but quarterback Craig Morton’s pass into the end zone fell incomplete, turning the ball over to the Packers on downs. Green Bay then ran out the clock to preserve their victory and claim their eleventh NFL Championship.

The 1992 NFC Championship Game
The 1992 NFC Championship Game was a National Football League (NFL) game played on January 17, 1993, to determine the National Football Conference (NFC) champion for the 1992 season. The game was won by the Dallas Cowboys, 30–13, over the San Francisco 49ers. This game is notable for featuring the highest score in NFL playoff history.
The 49ers entered the game seeking to become the first team ever to win five Super Bowls. They also sought to tie the Pittsburgh Steelers for having the most Super Bowl wins with six. The Cowboys, on the other hand, were looking for their sixth NFC title in team history and first since then-head coach Jimmy Johnson joined the team in 1989.
Early in the game, San Francisco wide receiver Jerry Rice caught a touchdown pass from quarterback Steve Young to give his team a 7–0 lead. However, Dallas responded with two touchdown passes from quarterback Troy Aikman to take a 14–7 lead at halftime.
In the second half, Dallas continued their scoring with two more touchdown passes from Aikman—one to wide receiver Michael Irvin and another one to tight end Jay Novacek—to make the score 28–10. The 49ers then scored a late touchdown on a 1-yard run by running back Ricky Watters, but it was not enough as Dallas held on to win 30–13 and advance to Super Bowl XXVII where they would defeat the Buffalo Bills 52–17.
