We all know that records are meant to be broken. But what was the highest score in baseball history? We did a little digging and found out.
The Highest Score In Baseball History
There have been some incredible scoring games in the history of baseball. The highest score ever recorded in a game was 36-0, which was set in 1864. This record has been unmatched for over 150 years. Let’s take a look at some of the other highest scoring games in baseball history.
The Highest Score Achieved In A Game
The highest score ever achieved in a baseball game was on Sunday, August 16, 1925 between the Chicago Cubs and Pittsburgh Pirates. The Cubs won 26-23 in what became known as the “Inning of Shame” due to the fact that 25 runs were scored in the bottom of the ninth inning.
The Most Runs Scored In A Game
The most runs scored in a game is 36, which has happened four times in MLB history. The first instance was in 1871, when the Troy Haymakers defeated the Brooklyn Eckfords 42-20. Three years later, the Haymakers did it again, this time defeating the Brooklyn Excelsiors 23-11.
The Chicago Colts (now the Cubs) set the record in 1897, defeating the Louisville Colonels 26-7. The record was tied in 1922 when the New York Giants defeated the Philadelphia Phillies 23-8. No team has come close to matching that score since.
The Most Runs Scored In A Season
In 1864, an unusual baseball game took place. It was between the Brooklyn Excelsiors and the New York Mutuals. The game went on for 10 innings, and by the end of it, the Excelsiors had scored an astounding 121 runs. The Mutuals, on the other hand, had managed to score just 39.
This game still holds the record for the most runs scored by a team in a game, as well as the most runs scored by a losing team. It’s unlikely that either of these records will ever be broken!
The Highest Score Achieved By A Team
The Chicago White Sox set the record for the highest score achieved by a team in a single game when they beat the Milwaukee Brewers 30-0 in 2007. It was a shutout victory, with the White Sox pitchers not allowing a single run. The game was played at U.S. Cellular Field in Chicago.
The Most Runs Scored In A Game
In baseball, the most runs scored in a game by a team is 49, which was done by the Chicago Colts (now the Cubs) on June 29, 1897, against the Louisville Colonels. The most runs ever scored in a major league game is 36, which was done in a game between the Detroit Wolverines and the Cincinnati Red Stockings on June 7, 1884.
The Most Runs Scored In A Season
In 2001, the Seattle Mariners set the American League record for most runs scored in a season, with 1,007. The Mariners also set the Major League record that year for most runs scored in a season, besting the previous mark of 1,067 set by the 1897 Baltimore Orioles.
The Highest Score Achieved By An Individual
The highest score that was ever achieved in a game of baseball was by pitcher, Nolan Ryan. He pitched a no-hitter game against the Chicago White in 1991. In that game, he struck out 12 batters and walked none.
The Most Runs Scored In A Game
The record for the most runs scored in a game is held by the Chicago Cubs, who scored 36 runs against the Louisville Colonels on August 12, 1897. Interestingly, the game was called after eight innings due to darkness. The Cubs had already racked up 18 runs in the first four innings, and they added another 18 in the next four. At the time, it was the most runs ever scored by one team in a major league game.
The Most Runs Scored In A Season
The record for the most runs scored in a season is currently held by Babe Ruth, who scored 158 runs in 1921. This record has stood for almost 100 years and is extremely unlikely to be broken. Ruth’s record is so far ahead of the second-most prolific scorer, Barry Bonds, who only managed to score 143 runs in 2001, that it is safe to say that Ruth’s record will never be broken.
