What Were The Original 6 NHL Teams?
Contents
The National Hockey League (NHL) was founded in 1917 with six original teams: the Montreal Canadiens, Toronto Maple Leafs, Boston Bruins, Chicago Blackhawks, Detroit Red Wings, and New York Rangers. These teams have been through some changes over the years, but the Original Six is still an important part of NHL history.
The Original Six
There were originally six teams in the National Hockey League (NHL), and they are now commonly referred to as The Original Six. These teams were the Boston Bruins, Chicago Blackhawks, Detroit Red Wings, Montreal Canadiens, New York Rangers, and Toronto Maple Leafs. These six teams were the only teams in the NHL from 1942 until 1967 when the league doubled in size to 12 teams.
The Boston Bruins
The Bruins were the first American team in the NHL, joining the league in 1924. They were also the first team to win the Stanley Cup, doing so in 1929. The Bruins have won the Cup six times since then, most recently in 2011.
The Chicago Blackhawks
One of the Original Six teams, the Blackhawks have a long and storied history in the NHL. Founded in 1926, the team has won five Stanley Cups, most recently in 2015. The Blackhawks are known for their fierce rivals, particularly the Detroit Red Wings and the St. Louis Blues.
The Detroit Red Wings
The Detroit Red Wings are a professional ice hockey team based in Detroit, Michigan. They are members of the Atlantic Division in the Eastern Conference of the National Hockey League (NHL) and are one of the Original Six teams of the league. TheRed Wings were founded in 1926 as the Detroit Cougars, one of the first professional hockey teams in Detroit. The Cougars were renamed the Falcons in 1930 and then changed their name again to Red Wings in 1932.
The Montreal Canadiens
The Montreal Canadiens were one of the first six teams to join the National Hockey League (NHL). The team was founded in 1909, and they played their first game against the Ottawa Senators on January 6, 1910. The Canadiens are the oldest professional hockey team in North America, and they are also one of the most successful teams in the history of the sport. The team has won 24 Stanley Cup championships, which is more than any other team in the NHL.
The New York Rangers
The New York Rangers were one of the original six teams of the National Hockey League (NHL) when the league began operations in 1926. The Rangers, along with the Original Six teams, enjoyed success in the early years of the NHL. The Rangers won their first Stanley Cup in 1928, defeating the Montreal Maroons in the finals. The team went on to win two more Stanley Cups in 1933 and 1940.
The Toronto Maple Leafs
The Toronto Maple Leafs, Montreal Canadiens, New York Rangers, Boston Bruins, Chicago Blackhawks, and Detroit Red Wings made up the Original Six. These teams were the only teams in the National Hockey League from 1942 until 1967. Out of these six teams, the Toronto Maple Leafs have had the most Stanley Cup wins with thirteen.
