The National Basketball Association, or NBA, was founded in 1946. It was originally known as the Basketball Association of America, or BAA. The league originally consisted of eleven teams: the New York Knickerbockers, Philadelphia Warriors, Boston Celtics, Detroit Falcons, Chicago Stags, Washington Capitols, Cleveland Rebels, Toronto Huskies, St. Louis Bombers and Pittsburgh Ironmen.

The first National Basketball Association game was played on October 11, 1946. It was between the New York Knicks and the Toronto Huskies. The game was played at Maple Leaf Gardens in Toronto, Canada. The Knicks won the game by a score of 68-66.

The first NBA season was in 1947. This was the same year that the Basketball Association of America (BAA) was founded. The BAA merged with the National Basketball League (NBL) in 1949 to form the NBA.
