The Texans joined the NFL in 2002 as an expansion team, after Houston’s previous franchise, the Houston Oilers, relocated to Nashville, Tennessee, where they are now the Tennessee Titans. The team plays its home games at NRG Stadium in Houston.

The Texans have won two AFC South division championships (2011 and 2012) and have made nine playoff appearances since 2002. As of 2019, the Texans are coached by Bill O’Brien and have an active streak of five consecutive winning seasons.

In their first season, the Texans finished with a record of 4-12. The team’s first win came against the Dallas Cowboys on October 6, 2002. Led by quarterback David Carr and wide receiver Andre Johnson, the Texans finished the season with a 7-9 record in 2003 and qualified for their first playoff berth in franchise history. The Texans went on to lose to the eventual Super Bowl champion New England Patriots in the Wild Card round of the playoffs.

The following season, Carr was severely injured in a game against the Buffalo Bills and missed most of the 2004 season. The Texans finished with a 5-11 record without Carr and failed to qualify for the playoffs. In 2005, Carr returned healthy and led the Texans to an 8-8 finish and another playoff appearance. The team lost to the Pittsburgh Steelers in the Wild Card round for a second consecutive season.

The Texans failed to make the playoffs again until 2009, when they posted a 9-7 record and earned a Wild Card berth. They went on to lose to eventual Super Bowl champions New Orleans Saints in their first ever playoff game at home. In 2010, led by new head coach Gary Kubiak and rookie quarterback T.J. Yates, Houston finished with a 6-10 record but won their final three games of the season after Yates took over as starter following injuries to Matt Schaub and Matt Leinart.

In 2011, despite struggling through much of the season with injuries (most notably to key players such as Schaub, Mario Williams, Brian Cushing, Connor Barwin, Andre Johnson), Kubiak led the Texans to their first ever division title with a 10-6 record (their first winning season since 2009). They defeated Cincinnati Bengals in desperate fashion 31-10 in the Wild Card round of playoffs behind 258 passing yards from Schaub and two touchdown receptions from Johnson en route to their franchise’s first ever AFC Divisional Playoff appearance against Baltimore Ravens which they lost 20-13 despite having a chance to tie late in fourth quarter on 3rd down & 3 at HOU 46 yd line but Schaub was intercepted by Ravens’ cornerback Corey Graham effectively ending their chances at comeback as time ran out shortly afterwards giving Ravens divisional playoff victory & trip back to AFC Championship game for 2nd straight year while handing Texans heartbreaking loss & dashing their hopes at reaching AFC Championship game for 1st time ever in just their 10th year of existence as expansion franchise becoming only 2nd team ever (other being Atlanta Falcons) since NFL went to current 12 team 4 division format back in 2002 (2 years after Texans joined league) not make it past divisional round of playoffs during 1st decade of existence along with Seattle Seahawks who also joined league same year as Houston back in 2002 although Seahawks have made trip past divisional round 3 times during past decade while also playing in 2 Super Bowls during that span winning 1 back during 2013 season while losing other one just last year during 2014 season against rival New England Patriots.
