How the NBA Playoff Bracket Works
The NBA playoff bracket is a tournament consisting of the top eight teams in each conference, with each conference playing separate tournaments. The playoffs are a best-of-seven series, and the winners of each series advance to the next round. The NBA Finals is the championship series of the playoffs, and the winner of that series is the NBA champion.

The National Basketball Association Conference Finals are the Eastern and Western championship series of the NBA, played after the first three rounds of the playoffs. The Conference Finals are two best-of-seven playoff series to determine the league champion from each conference. These two league champions will then face off in the NBA Finals.

The Finals was originally established in 1947, as the Basketball Association of America (BAA) Final Series. The BAA merged with the National Basketball League (NBL) to form the NBA in 1949, and the NBA Finals was contested between the Eastern Conference and Western Conference champions from that year until 1970, when a previous arrangement was resumed and an NBA Finals between two division winners was held each year. From 1971 to 1974, when an expansion created two additional conferences in each league, four division winners qualified for what then became a conventional four-team bracket contested in a best-of-seven series. In 1975, when another expansion franchise was added to each league, “ wild card” teams began to be included in the bracket if they were not division winners; they had to finish higher than one or more of either (a) all non-division winners in their own conference or (b) all but two of non-division winners in both conferences. As a result of these changes, it has been possible since 1984 for one or bothWild Card teams to come from any given division except for those whose first- and second-place teams met in that year’s Finals (or came from opposite ends of a spectrum such as 1994’s Western Conference Finals which saw bottom seed Denver Nuggets face off against top seed San Antonio Spurs).
How to Fill Out the NBA Playoff Bracket
The NBA Playoff Bracket is a tournament consisting of the top eight teams in the NBA. The teams are seeded based on their regular season record. The bracket is then filled out so that the first seed plays the eighth seed, the second seed plays the seventh seed, and so on. The higher seed always has home court advantage.
