Southeast Division

The Southeast Division is one of the three divisions in the Eastern Conference of the National Basketball Association (NBA). The division consists of five teams, all of which are located in southeastern United States.

The Southeast Division began play in the 1974-75 NBA season as part of the conference’s expansion into then-unexplored territory. At that time, it was made up of the Atlanta Hawks, Charlotte Hornets (now the New Orleans Pelicans), Miami Heat, Orlando Magic and Washington Bullets (now the Washington Wizards). The Charlotte Hornets franchise joined the NBA in 1988 as an expansion team and were immediately put into the Southeast Division.

In 2004, the NBA restructured itself into six divisions instead of four. As a result, the Southeast Division absorbed most of the teams from what was then known as the Central Division. The Bullets changed their name to Wizards in 1997, and shortly thereafter in 2001, the Charlotte franchise became known as the Bobcats. In 2014, however, Charlotte reverted back to their original name, Hornets.

Today, the Southeast Division consists of these five teams:
-Atlanta Hawks
-Charlotte Hornets
-Miami Heat
-Orlando Magic
-Washington Wizards

Western Conference

The Western Conference of the National Basketball Association (NBA) is one of two conferences that makes up the league, the other being the Eastern Conference. Like the Eastern Conference, the Western Conference is made up of 15 teams, organized in three divisions.

The division has also produced four NBA Rookie of the Year Award winners: Carmelo Anthony (2003), Derrick Rose (2009), Blake Griffin (2011) and Karl-Anthony Towns (2016).

The division was created at the start of the 2004–05 season as part of a league realignment that saw the creation of three additional divisions in each conference. Prior to that season, the NBA was divided into two conferences, each consisting of three divisions.

It is widely considered to be the premier men’s professional basketball league in the world. The NBA Finals is the championship series of the NBA and the conclusion of the sport’s postseason. All Finals have been played in a best-of-seven format, and are contested between the winners of the Eastern Conference and the Western Conference (formerly Division Finals).

Eastern Conference vs. Western Conference

The National Basketball Association (NBA) Finals is the championship series of the NBA and the conclusion of the sport’s postseason. All NBA Finals have been played in a best-of-seven format, and contested between the winners of the Eastern Conference and the Western Conference (formerly Divisions before 1970), except in 1950 when the Eastern Division champion defended their title against the winner of the Western Division. The winning team of a Conference Finals series earns a direct berth in the Finals, which culminates a respective league’s entire postseason. Since 1949, the Eastern Conference/Division leads the Western Conference/Division in wins with 33 victories.
