The NHL announced that it will be adding a 32nd team to the league. The new team will be located in Seattle and will begin play in the 2021-2022 season.
Introduction
NHL hockey is back and there is a new team on the ice! The NHL Expansion draft was held on June 21, 2017 and the new team is the Las Vegas Golden Knights. This is the first time in 17 years that the NHL has had an expansion draft and it was very exciting to watch.
The NHL expansion draft works like this: each of the 30 current NHL teams had to protect either seven forwards, three defensemen, and one goaltender OR eight skaters (forwards/defensemen) and one goaltender. Then, the Golden Knights were able to select one player from each team.
Some of the notable players that were picked by the Golden Knights include: Marc-Andre Fleury (Pittsburgh Penguins), James Neal (Nashville Predators), Jonathan Marchessault (Florida Panthers), and Reilly Smith (Boston Bruins).
The Golden Knights will begin play in the 2017-2018 season and we can’t wait to see how they do!
NHL’s new team
On January 1, 2017, the NHL expanded to 31 teams with the addition of the Vegas Golden Knights. The previous 30 teams were organized into two 15-team conferences: the Eastern Conference and the Western Conference. With the addition of Vegas, the NHL realigned into a more balanced schedule with two conferences of 16 teams each and four divisions within each conference.
Why the new NHL team is successful
Since the NHL expanded to 31 teams in 2017, the league has been looking for a 32nd team. That process took a big step forward on Wednesday, when the NHL announced that it had awarded an expansion franchise to Seattle.
The new team, which will begin play in 2021, has already been extremely successful. In just two days, the team has sold more than 25,000 season tickets. That’s more than any other NHL expansion team has sold in its first week.
There are several reasons for the new team’s early success. First, Seattle is a hockey hotbed. There are currently three Division I college hockey teams in the city (University of Washington, Seattle University, and Western Washington University), and all three have strong fan bases.
Second, the new team will be playing in a state-of-the-art arena. The arena, which is currently under construction, will be located in Seattle’s downtown core and is scheduled to open in 2020. It will have a capacity of 18,100 for hockey games.
Third, the new team has a strong ownership group that includes Hollywood producer Jerry Bruckheimer and investment banker David Bonderman. This ownership group has both the deep pockets and the experience necessary to build a successful franchise.
Fourth, Seattle is one of the fastest-growing cities in North America. In 2017, it was ranked as the fastest-growing city in the United States by Forbes magazine. And according to U.S. Census data released earlier this year, Seattle’s population increased by more than 15% between 2010 and 2018. That population growth is expected to continue in the years to come.
All of these factors combine to make Seattle an ideal market for an NHL expansion team. It’s no wonder that the new team has been so successful in its first week of existence.
What the new NHL team offers fans
The new NHL team offers fans a chance to see some of the best hockey players in the world compete against each other. The team also has a storied history, dating back to its inception in 1917. The team’s home arena is located in the heart of the city, making it easy for fans to get to and from games.
How the new NHL team is different from other teams
The new NHL team is different from other teams in a few ways. One way is that they have a more experienced and older team. Another difference is that the new NHL team has more talent, and are more skilled than most other teams. The new NHL team also has a lot more size, which will help them be more physical on the ice.
Conclusion
After much thought and discussion, the NHL has decided to add a 32nd team to the league. The new team will be located in Seattle, Washington and will begin playing in the 2021-2022 season.
This is great news for hockey fans in the Pacific Northwest who have been clamoring for an NHL team for many years. The addition of a 32nd team also means that the NHL will realign its divisions and conferences, which should lead to more competitive balance throughout the league.
We don’t know much about the new team yet, but we’ll be sure to keep you updated as more information becomes available.
