History

The Miami Heat are an American professional basketball team based in Miami. The Heat compete in the National Basketball Association (NBA) as a member of the league’s Eastern Conference Southeast Division. They play their home games at the American Airlines Arena, and have won three NBA championships.

The franchise began play in the 1988–89 NBA season as an expansion team. Alongside the Charlotte Hornets, the Heat would be the last of the late-1980s expansion franchises to make their debuts in either conference. In 1997, led by future Hall of Famers Alonzo Mourning and Tim Hardaway, Miami advanced to perennial Eastern Conference powerhouse Indiana Pacers, though they would ultimately fall in seven games. The franchise managed to make four more playoff runs during the next six years, but failed to advance beyond the first round of playoffs every time.

In 2003, following a period of mediocrity, the heat underwent a dramatic turnaround led by young players Dwyane Wade and Shaquille O’Neal; Wade would win his first NBA championship that year, which was quickly followed up by another one in 2006; Wade would also be named Finals MVP both times. After O’Neal’s departure following their second triumph, Wade led Miami to two more consecutive NBA Finals appearances, winning back-to-back championships again in 2012 and 2013; he was also rightfully awarded with Finals MVP on those two occasions. Following their 2013 triumph, LeBron James – who had played for Cleveland since he was drafted first overall out of high school in 2003 – joined Miami; James led the team to four consecutive Finals appearances from 2011 to 2014, winning two more championships alongside Wade in 2012 and 2013 before departing for his hometown Cavaliers again following their 2014 loss to San Antonio Spurs.

Chris Bosh joined James and Wade as one of Miami’s “Big Three” prior to their 2010–11 season; all three players would depart after Bosh missed most of that campaign due to blood clots diagnosed during February 2016 that subsequently ended his playing career. However, even with those departures, Pat Riley’s squad went on to enjoy considerable success over much of the next decade: they reached the playoffs every year from 1997 until 2016 (apart from a brief absence in 2008), made 11 trips to at least the Conference Finals during that span (a league record), and qualified for five straight NBA Finals between 2010 and 2014 (tying another league mark). In addition they won nine division titles – second most behind only San Antonio’s 12 – including seven straight from 1997 through 2003 (which itself is an ongoing NBA record).

In 2017, after going 11–30 through 41 games following an 11–10 start to the season which had seen them miss postseason for just first time since 2008 behind a revolving door at point guard position marred by injuries amongst others issues including Whiteside’s disagreements with head coach Erik Spoelstra over role on team which led Spoelstra initially sending him home prior one game versus Chicago followed by D-League assignment.[53] The heat finished regular season fifth worst record in Eastern Conference behind only Brooklyn Nets,[54] Chicago Bulls,[55] Atlanta Hawks[56]. Subsequently Riley decided fire head coach Spoelstra who proceeded leading team back into playoffs next year where they were swept by Philadelphia 76ers.[57][58][59]

The franchise began play in 1988 as an expansion team, where after a period of mediocrity, theHeat would gain relevance during the 1990s following the departure of several star players. Two men pivotal in those years were head coach Pat Riley, who would form the core of players including Alonzo Mourning, Tim Hardaway, and Shaquille O’Neal which would lead to their first NBA title in 2006. The same core group would then go on to win two more consecutive titles (2012 and 2013).

Following those years, players Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh departed in free agency respectively; Wade returned to the team in 2018.
