The Cleveland Indians
The Cleveland Indians are a professional baseball team based in Cleveland, Ohio. They are members of the American League Central Division. The Indians play their home games at Progressive Field. The “Indians” name originates from a request by then owner Cy Young in 1915 to change the team’s nickname from the “Naps” to something more patriotic. In reference to the Boston Red Sox, who were then known as the “Americans”, Young selected the name “Indians”, as it was a Native American term used for all peoples of North America prior to 1492. First intending to use Chiefs as the team’s nickname, instead he chose Indians after learning that Louis Sockalexis, a Native American player who had briefly played for Cleveland in 1897, was widely regarded as one of baseball’s first major stars.
The franchise originated in Grand Rapids, Michigan, in 1894 as the Grand Rapids Rustlers, a minor league charter member of the Western League. For the 1900 season, they moved over to what would become known as Granger Park and joined baseball’s newly formed American League (AL), as part of a conflict with their former league which resulted in that organization ceasing operations when too many of its teams bolted for greener pastures (in this case, four AL franchises). The AL declared itself a major league later that year and chielfly due to signing Napoleon Lajoie away from their crosstown rivals, who were also known as Naps at that time. The transplanted Rustlers finished 5th out of 8 teams with an even 60-60 record while attendance sagged due largely because of competition with two other area teams which were also contending for fan interest. Those other clubs included: The Spiders (later known as the predecessor ballclubs to today’s St. Louis Cardinals), located about ten miles south on Broadway Street; and Forest Citys (later known colloquially as The Foresters), located west on Woodland Avenue near Kinsman Road)which was also home ballpark for many years during its early history before eventually relocating south along Euclid Avenue into what is today University Circle where it became League Park and remains today as part owners via Jacobs Field ballpark located there since 1994 – both clubs moved into new purpose-built facilities along those streets within months afterCLEVELAND INDIANS GAME SCOREthe rustlers’ departure..

The inning
In baseball, the inning is the unit of play, where each team bats in succession and tries to score runs. It is also known as a “half-inning”, because in each inning, both teams get a turn at batting. The game ends after the visiting team completes their half-inning, and the winner is the team that scores more runs. In baseball statistics, innings pitched (IP) refers to the number of innings a pitcher has completed, while hits + walks allowed per inning pitched (WHIP) is a more accurate measure of pitchers’ effectiveness.
The score
The game is tied at four runs apiece.
The hits
The hits are the number of times a batter safely reaches first base after hitting the ball into play. A hit is also awarded to a batter who reaches first base on a fielder’s choice, error, dropped third strike or bases-loaded walk. A batting average is calculated by dividing the number of hits by the number of at-bats.

The loser
The sun had set long ago, leaving the scoreboards dark. The fans had all left, some in happy disbelief, others in shocked silence.
