Founded in 1883
The San Francisco Giants are a professional baseball team based in San Francisco, California. They compete in Major League Baseball (MLB) as a member club of the National League (NL) West division. As one of the oldest baseball teams in existence, the franchise has won more titles than any other team in the National League since the institution of divisional play in 1969.
The team was founded in 1883 as the New York Gothams. They played four seasons in New York before relocating to San Francisco, where they were renamed the San Francisco Giants. The Giants won two World Series championships (in 1905 and 1911) while members of the National League and playing their home games at AT&T Park. After 58 seasons in San Francisco, they moved to Candlestick Park where they played until 1999 when they moved to Pacific Bell Park, now known as AT&T Park again. In 2010, the team moved to its current home, Oracle Park.
During most of their history, the Giants have been one of baseball’s more successful teams; they have played in 20 World Series and have won eight championships. As successful as the Giants have been on the field, however, they have had some struggles off it: after their move from New York following the 1957 season, Ancestry DNA tests undertaken on behalf of Major League Baseball revealed that members of different Giant squads had engaged in sign stealing—a major rules violation—during various seasons going back to 1951.
