What’s Under a WWE Ring?

What’s under a WWE ring? It’s not just the mat! There’s a lot of special equipment that goes into making a WWE match safe and exciting. Let’s take a look at some of the most important pieces of equipment under that WWE ring.

The Ring

The Canvas

Underneath the ring is a layer of cloth called the canvas. The size and shape of the canvas vary depending on the type of wrestling being performed, but it is always securely attached to the floor and the ropes. The wrestlers bounce off the canvas when they are thrown or tumble, so it needs to be tough and durable.

The Padding

The ring is made up of several different layers of material, all designed to provide a certain level of safety and protection for the wrestlers. The very top layer is usually made of wood, which is then covered with canvas or another type of padding. This is followed by a layer of springs, which helps to absorb some of the impact when wrestlers are thrown or dropped onto the mat. Finally, there is a layer of foam, which provides additional cushioning.

The Steel Cables

The steel cables that support a WWE ring are some of the most important aspects of the structure. Without them, the ring would collapse. There are generally four steel cables that support a WWE ring. Two of them run from the top of each corner post to the bottom, while the other two run from the middle of each side of the ring to the bottom.

The Mat

The Foam

The WWE ring is made up of several different layers, all of which are necessary to provide a safe and stable surface for wrestlers to perform on. The bottom layer is a thick piece of shock-absorbent foam, which is designed to protect wrestlers from the hard floor underneath. The next layer is a thin piece of plywood, which provides a firm base for the foam to sit on. The top layer is made up of several different layers of padding, including high-density foam and closed-cell foam, which help to soften the impact of moves performed in the ring.

The Coils

The steel coils are perhaps the most important element of the mat. There are usually four steel coils evenly spaced around the ring. They are placed within the ring post and help to support the weight of WWE Superstars and keep the ring ropes tight. The steel coils are also what give the ring that unique “bounce” that WWE fans have come to love.

The Springs

Underneath the ring is a set of steel springs that allows the superstars to easily bounce off the ropes and perform their amazing feats. The tension of the springs can be adjusted to allow for more or less “give” in the ropes.

The Turnbuckles

The Pads

The turnbuckles are big, soft, and squishy because they have to be. They’re made up of several different layers of materials, all designed to protect the wrestlers as much as possible.

The first layer is a vinyl covering. This is the stuff you see on the outside of the turnbuckle. It’s there to protect the other layers from wear and tear, and to make sure the turnbuckle doesn’t get too slippery when it gets wet (which happens often in WWE).

Underneath the vinyl is a layer of padding. This is usually made out of foam, but sometimes it’s a gel-like substance. The padding helps absorb impact and protect the wrestlers’ bodies when they’re hit against the turnbuckle.

The next layer is a metal frame. This is what gives the turnbuckle its shape and keeps everything in place. The metal frame also adds some weight to the turnbuckle, which helps keep it from tipping over if a wrestler tries to climb it.

Finally, there’s a layer of fabric on the inside of the turnbuckle. This helps protect the wrestlers’ skin from getting scraped by the metal frame or padding.

The Bolts

The ring is actually bolted together in several places. There are four turnbuckles at each corner, and each of those turnbuckles is Exchangeable. The top and bottom ropes are also attached to the ring via these turnbuckles. In addition, there are typically two center support beams that help keep the ring stabilized in the middle. These beams also have bolt holes in them so that they can be attached to the ring.

The Plates

The plates are the steel plates that the ring is built on. They are generally 1/4″ to 3/8″ thick and are bolted together. The corners of the plates are then welded and reinforced.

The Ropes

The ropes that hang around the ring are actually made of hemp, which is a type of fiber that’s derived from the cannabis plant. The ropes are really strong and can support the weight of wrestlers when they’re flying off the ropes during a match. The ring itself is made of steel, and the mat is made of wood.

The Core

The rings used in WWE are actually quite simple in terms of construction. At the very core of the ring is a steel frame. This frame is then covered with wood planks, which are held in place by steel bolts. The wood planks are usually around 2-3 inches thick, and they provide a solid foundation for the wrestlers to perform on.

The Coating

The Coating is the first layer which is a 3/4 inch plywood that is glued and screwed to the WWE Standard Ring Posts. The standard size for a WWE ring is 20 feet wide in the middle and 16 feet wide on the sides. There are also smaller variations of this ring which include 16 feet wide in the middle and 14 feet wide on the sides as well as a 13-foot ring. Anything under 16 feet wide in the middle is not an regulation size for WWE.

The canvas is stretched over the 3/4-inch plywood and wrapped around the top and bottom steel leading edges. The bottom edge has 1/2-inch steel tubing welded to it and this extends up around 6 to 8 inches along the outside of the ring. This provides a very solid base for wrestlers to jump off of when performing aerial maneuvers

The Braiding

The top rope of a WWE ring is actually made up of three separate ropes that are braided together. The center rope is made of a soft, pliable material, while the outer ropes are made of a harder, more durable material. This combination provides the perfect amount of give and bounce for WWE Superstars to safely execute their signature moves.
