When Can NFL Teams Start Trading?
Contents
It’s never too early to start thinking about trades in the NFL. Here’s a look at when teams can start trading players.
Introduction
In the NFL, trades are only allowed during specific periods during the year. These are called “trade deadlines.” The trade deadline for the 2019 season is October 29th. After this date, no trades can be made until the end of the season.
Trades in the NFL
The NFL’s trade deadline is on October 29th at 4:00 p.m. EST. However, teams can start trading players before that date. The earliest date that a trade can happen is during the preseason, but most trades occur during the regular season.
Pre-season
Teams can trade players at any time during the year, but most trades occur during the offseason and preseason. The NFL’s trading period begins at 4 p.m. ET on the Tuesday following the 10th weekend of the regular season and ends on the Tuesday after the conclusion of the NFL Draft.
During the regular season, players can only be traded on Tuesdays. In order for a trade to be processed, both teams must notify the league office and complete all paperwork by 4:00 p.m. ET that day. If a trade meets these conditions, it will go into effect at 4:00 p.m. ET on the following Tuesday.
During the season
NFL teams can start trading players as soon as the NFL season starts. However, trades usually happen during the NFL offseason. The NFL offseason is from the end of the Super Bowl until the start of training camp. The NFL Draft is also during this time.
Post-season
In the National Football League, teams can make trades year-round, but the trade deadline is typically during the season. NFL teams can make trades during the regular season, but most trades happen during the off-season.
The NFL off-season begins in late January or early February (after the Super Bowl) and continue through late April or early May (before training camp). During this time, all 32 NFL teams are allowed to engage in trades with each other. Trading is a big part of how NFL teams improve their rosters and position themselves for success in future seasons.
There are a few exceptions to when NFL teams can trade:
-Teams cannot trade players during the season from September 1st through December 31st.
-Trades made during the season become effective on the Tuesday following the 10th week of the season (November 12th).
-Teams cannot trade draft picks in the same year as the draft. For example, a team cannot trade its 2020 1st round pick in 2020; it would have to wait until 2021 to do so.
Why do teams trade?
Teams will most commonly trade because they either want to get rid of a player for various reasons, or they want to add a player to their team that will help them fill a need. NFL teams can start trading on March 17th, 2020.
To improve their team
Teams will often times trade players in order to improve their team. For example, if a team is lacking in a certain position, they may trade for a player that would fill that hole. Other times, teams may trade for players that they believe will be an upgrade over their current players.
To get rid of players they don’t want
Most professional sports teams trade players for one or more of the following reasons:
-To get rid of players they don’t want
-To get players they do want
-To get rid of salary
-To get rid of draft picks
How do teams trade?
Teams can start trading as soon as the NFL season is over. The trade deadline is during the NFL season, but teams can agree to trades and announce them after the season is over. Teams can also trade during the offseason.
Trades involving players
Under the current NFL Collective Bargaining Agreement, which was agreed to in 2011, the NFL trade deadline is week eight of the regular season. Prior to that, the deadline was week six. That means that this year, NFL teams have until November 3rd to make any trades involving players. After that date, no trades involving players can be made for the rest of the season.
However, there are still some trades that can be made after the deadline. Teams can still trade draft picks until the day of next year’s NFL Draft. So, if a team wants to trade its first-round pick for a player, it can do so up until the time of the draft. Trades involving players can also be made in the offseason.
Trades involving draft picks
The National Football League trading deadline is October 29th at 4:00 p.m. Eastern Time. After that date, no trades may be made until the following year’s trading period begins on the first day of the new league year in March.
There are two types of trades involving draft picks:
1) A trade in which a team traded a player and receive draft picks in return, or
2) A trade in which teams only trade draft picks.
In order for a trade to be official, both teams involved must call the NFL office and inform them of the terms of the trade before 4:00 p.m. on the day of the deadline.
Conclusion
The collective bargaining agreement between the NFL and the NFL Players Association stipulates that the trading period begins after the Super Bowl and ends at 4:00 p.m. EDT on the Tuesday following the 10th week of the regular season. Teams are not allowed to trade players during the season unless they have been granted an exception by the league.
