A player got two points for each game his team won and one point for each game it lost, with extra points awarded for hitting milestones like a home run or stolen base.

Fantasy baseball quickly caught on. By 1962, there were an estimated 100 leagues in the Boston area alone. And within a few years, leagues were springing up across the country.

The first fantasy baseball book

In the late 1940s, Daniel Okrent was a nine-year-old boy living in Michigan. One day, his father, Walter, came home from work with a stack of papers and a pencil. Walter had just been to a Chicago White Sox game, and he’d picked up the game program. In the back of the program, there was a half-page advertisement for “The Facts on Fantasy Baseball.” It promised to tell readers how to “get in on the biggest baseball craze since baseball cards!”

Okrent’s father bought the book and brought it home. The book explained the rules of a new game that Walter could play with his friends. In this game, each player would create their own team of real Major League Baseball players. They would then use statistics to score points and see who had the best team at the end of the season.

Okrent’s father enjoyed playing fantasy baseball with his friends, and he soon became one of the top fantasy baseball players in Michigan. In 1981, he took his passion for fantasy baseball one step further by co-founding Rotisserie League Baseball (now known as Fantasy Baseball). This new league allowed people from across the country to play fantasy baseball together via mail or telegraph.
