She won her first three matches in straight sets before defeating Serena Williams in the seventh match, 6–4, 6–7^(8–10), 6–2, to reach her second Grand Slam final. This was Williams’ first appearance in a Grand Slam final since she gave birth to her daughter in September 2017. In the final, Osaka defeated Petra Kvitová, becoming the first Japanese player to win a Grand Slam singles title, and earning her second Grand Slam title overall.
