The ABA Joins the NBA
In the summer of 1976, the NBA and ABA finally reached a merger agreement. The NBA agreed to absorb four ABA teams — the Denver Nuggets, San Antonio Spurs, Indiana Pacers, and New York Nets. As part of the deal, each of the ABA teams was required to pay a $3.2 million entry fee to join the NBA. The four teams joining the NBA were also given specific draft choices so that they could quickly catch up to the talent level of existing NBA teams.
The Three-Point Shot is Introduced
In the 1979-1980 season, the NBA experimented with a three-point shot, which was originally designed to add more scoring to the league. The three-point line was placed 22 feet away from the basket in the corners, and 23 feet and nine inches everywhere else around the arc. The Boston Celtics were the first team to try out the three-point shot, against the Houston Rockets. The game was a success, with Boston winning 126-115. The three-point shot would become a permanent fixture in the NBA from that season onwards.
