Toney struggled with drug addiction and was imprisoned for drug possession when O’Neal was an infant. Upon his release, he did not resume a place in O’Neal’s life and instead agreed to relinquish his parental rights to O’Neal’s Jamaican stepfather, Phillip Aongko.

O’Neal remained estranged from his biological father for decades. On his 1994 rap album Shaq Diesel, O’Neal voiced his feelings of disdain toward Toney in the song “Biological Didn’t Bother”, dismissing him with the line “Phil is my father.” However, O’Neal’s feelings toward Toney mellowed as he grew older; by the end of his career he spoke fondly of Toney and even reconciled with him in 2017. He credits Christopher Wallace—the rapper known as The Notorious B.I.G.—as someone who had a significant influence on him as a growing teenager: “Every time I’d see him we’d talk,” he said in an interview many years later, adding that Wallace would give him words of advice such as telling him to stay out of trouble and stay focused and telling him that if anybody ever put their hands on him that he should fight back rather than freeze up like most people would do during an altercation (Brigitte Nielsen once punched Shaq claims that Wallace told him that if this happened).
