The National Basketball Association (NBA) is the world’s premier men’s professional basketball league. It was founded in New York City on June 6, 1946, as the Basketball Association of America (BAA). The league adopted the name National Basketball Association in 1949 after merging with the rival National Basketball League. The first NBA season
The first NBA season began on November 1, 1946, with six teams from the National Basketball League (NBN) and Basketball Association of America (BAA), which were both dissolved to make way for the formation of the NBA. The inaugural season featured 11 teams playing a 60-game schedule. By the end of the season, only six teams remained: The Boston Celtics, Chicago Stags, Cleveland Rebels, Detroit Falcons, New York Knicks and Philadelphia Warriors. The first NBA champion was crowned on April 13, 1947, when the Warriors won the inaugural NBA Finals.

During the regular season, each team plays 82 games, 41 each home and away.
By the end of the season, usually in late April or early May, 16 teams (8 from each conference) have qualified for the Playoffs.
The Playoffs follow a tournament format and are contested by the top eight teams in each conference.
At the conclusion of the Playoffs, the two conference champions face each other in the best-of-seven NBA Finals.
The NBA playoffs
The NBA playoffs are a best-of-seven elimination tournament held after the conclusion of the NBA regular season. The tournament bracket is made up of eight teams from each of the two conferences: the Western Conference and the Eastern Conference.
The first round of the playoffs, or the conference quarterfinals, features matchups between the 1st seed and the 8th seed, the 2nd seed and the 7th seed, the 3rd seed and the 6th seed, and the 4th seed and the 5th seed.
