In 1920, the American Professional Football Association was born. Jim Thorpe was named its first president. The following year, the Association became the National Football League.

The league began with 14 teams: The Akron Pros, Canton Bulldogs, Chicago Cardinals, Chicago Bears, Cincinnati Reds, Dayton Triangles, Decatur Staleys, Detroit Hounds, Hammond Pros, Massillon Tigers , Buffalo All-Americans , Minneapolis Marines , New York Giants , Rochester Jeffersons and Rock Island Independents.

The NFL’s first game was played on October 3rd, 1920 between the Rock Island Independents and the St. Paul Ideals. The Independents won by a score of 48-0. George Halas’ Decatur Staleys (now the Chicago Bears) won the NFL Championship that year.

From these humble beginnings sprung one of America’s most popular professional sports leagues. Today, the NFL is made up of 32 teams and is watched by millions of fans around the world.

After the merge, there were 21 NFL teams. The first ever NFL game between two merged teams was played on October 3, 1926 between New York Giants and Providence Steam Roller.

In 1960, another merger occurred between the NFL and AFL. This time, there were two separate leagues: the National Football League (NFL) and the American Football League (AFL). The AFL was made up of 8 teams while the NFL had 16 teams. In 1970, both leagues merged into one league with two conferences: National Football Conference (NFC) and American Football Conference (AFC). There are now 32 NFL teams divided equally between these conferences.

Over the years, several changes have been made to expand or relocate NFL teams. In 1953, three new franchises were added: The Baltimore Colts ,the Detroit Lions , and the Cleveland Browns . In 1960s ,the Dallas Cowboys ,Minnesota Vikings ,and Atlanta Falcons joined as new franchises . In 1976 ,the Seattle Seahawks and Tampa Bay Buccaneers began playing .The most recent franchise additions occurred in 2002 with Houston Texans and 2002 with Carolina Panthers .
