The award ceremony is usually held in June, although the exact date and location are typically not announced until the end of the regular season. MVP

The NBA MVP award is given to the most valuable player in the National Basketball Association. The winner is selected by a panel of sports writers and broadcasters throughout the United States and Canada. The award is given out at the end of the regular season.

Defensive Player of the Year

The Defensive Player of the Year Award is an annual National Basketball Association (NBA) award given since the 1982–83 NBA season to the best defensive player of the regular season. The winner is selected by a panel of 124 sportswriters and broadcasters throughout the United States and Canada, each of whom casts a vote for first, second and third place selections. Each first-place vote is worth five points, each second-place vote is worth three points, and each third-place vote is worth one point. The player with the highest point total, regardless of the number of first-place votes, wins the award.

Since its inception, the award has been given to four players multiple times: Dikembe Mutombo (four times), Ben Wallace (four times), Dwight Howard (three times) and Gary Payton (two times). Mutombo is also the only player to win in back-to-back years (1995–96 and 1996–97). Howard is the only player to have won in three consecutive seasons (2008–09, 2009–10, 2010–11). Payton is also tied with Kevin Garnett for having won this award in two different decades when he earned defensive player accolades after leading defensive efforts during 2000–01 season as a member of Seattle SuperSonics organization.

Rookie of the Year

The Rookie of the Year Award is an annual National Basketball Association (NBA) award given to the top rookie(s) of the regular season. Initiated following the 1952–53 NBA season, it confers the Eddie Gottlieb Trophy, named after Eddie Gottlieb, one of the NBA’s first coaches.

Every year, the NBA selects two players—one from each conference—for this honor. Since its inception, the award has been given to 33 different players. The most recent recipients are Luka Dončić and Trae Young, who were jointly awarded the honor in 2019.

Sixth Man of the Year

The National Basketball Association’s Sixth Man of the Year Award is given to the league’s best performing player for his team coming off the bench as a substitute. A staple of the NBA since the 1981–82 season, every year since the sixth man award has been given to a player on an NBA team. The most recent recipient of the NBA Sixth Man Award is Montrezl Harrell.

Most Improved Player

The NBA Most Improved Player Award is an annual National Basketball Association (NBA) award given to the player who is considered to have shown the most progress during the regular season. The winner is selected by a panel of sportswriters and broadcasters throughout the United States and Canada, each of whom casts a vote for first, second and third place selections. Each first-place vote is worth five points, second-place votes are worth three points, and a third-place vote is worth one point. The player with the highest point total, regardless of the number of first-place votes, wins the award.

Coach of the Year

The NBA Coach of the Year Award is an annual National Basketball Association (NBA) award given since the 1962–63 NBA season. The winner receives the Red Auerbach Trophy, which is named in honor of the head coach who led the Boston Celtics to nine NBA Championships from 1956 to 1966. The trophy features a golden basketball over a red and white triangle, with the word “Coach” written across it.

Since its inception, the award has been given to 31 different coaches. Jim Lynam, Bill Fitch, Cotton Fitzsimmons and Gene Shue are tied for the most wins, with two each. Gregg Popovich, Doc Rivers, Don Nelson and Pat Riley have won the award three times each, and Rick Carlisle, Mike D’Antoni and Quin Snyder have won it twice each. Lenny Wilkens is the only person to have won both the Coach of the Year Award and its predecessors, namely the Red Auerbach Trophy ( 1959–60) and Walter Kennedy Citizenship Award (1977).

Seven coaches have won both this award and an NBA Championship: Red Auerbach (1964), Tom Heinsohn (1968), Johnny Kerr (1973), Bill Fitch (1974/76), K.C. Jones (1984), Pat Riley (1987) and Gregg Popovich (2003/05/07). Five coaches have won both this award and an NBA Championship as a player: John Kundla (1959), Lenny Wilkens (1972), Tom Nissalke(1977), Paul Westhead(1980)and Hubie Brown(2002). None of them has ever won this award Westonheads two wins as a player make him both one of only four people to win this trophy both ways as well as one of only four players-turned-coaches to win this trophy in his first year as coach with his new team; he is also therefore one of only two people to accomplish either feat more than once.

Gregg Popovich is currently the longest-tenured active head coach in both years coached and games coached. He has been head coach of the San Antonio Spurs since December 1996; he also became that franchise’s general manager in July 2002 before giving up that title in 2016 but still remains its vice president of basketball operations. After Popovich’s Spurs lost in the 2008 Finals, he passed Wilkens for second place overall on June 13, 2009—behind only Kundla—and on February 10, 2010 he tied Kerr for second place in games coached behind only Lynam; Kerr was fired by Chicago on April 7 so Popovich remained alone in second place until January 5 when Rivers’ Celtics beat Detroit 121–102 to give him 1,000 career regular season coaching victories—the 19th head coach in NBA history to reach that milestone but just sixth all time among those who played no professional basketball themselves before becoming a head coach—and move him ahead of Popovich into second place all time among games coached behind only Lynam..

Executive of the Year

The NBA Executive of the Year Award is an annual award given since the 1972–73 NBA season, to the best general manager in the National Basketball Association (NBA). Before 2009, the Executive of the Year was presented annually by Sporting News, but was officially recognized by the NBA only in that year. Since 2009, the award has been presented by NBA.com.
