Introduction
The National Football League Most Valuable Player Award (NFL MVP) is an award given by various media outlets to the American football player who is considered the most valuable in the National Football League (NFL). The winner is usually announced at the annual NFL Honors awards show the day before the Super Bowl.
Since 1957, the award has been presented by the Associated Press (AP), and since 2012, it has been officially presented by National Football League (NFL) itself. From 1986 to 2013, it was also presented by United Press International (UPI). Before 1957, several different awards were presented, including one for a “lineman” and one for a “backs”.
nominations for the award are made by all 50 members of the AP’s Pro Football Hall of Fame Selection Committee, as well as sports writers and broadcasters from across the country. Each voter separately ranks their top 10 players on a 10-point system, with a first-place vote worth 10 points, a second-place vote worth nine points, and so on. The committee tabulates all votes and announces its top choices for first-team All-Pro honors prior to the presentation of other annual league awards at NFL Honors.
As of 2019, only four players have won the award three times: quarterbacks Brett Favre and Peyton Manning, linebacker Lawrence Taylor, and running back Adrian Peterson. Wide receiver Jerry Rice is the only player to have won it three times consecutively (1987–1989). Running back Jim Brown is also a three-time winner but not consecutively. With his most recent win in 2014, quarterback Aaron Rodgers became only the second player after Manning to win MVP in consecutive years.
What is the NFL MVP?
The National Football League Most Valuable Player Award (NFL MVP) is an award given by various media outlets to the American football player who is considered the most valuable in the National Football League (NFL). The winner receives the Pete Rozelle Trophy, which is named after former NFL commissioner Pete Rozelle. The vote for the winner of the award is conducted by a panel of 50 NFL personnel “comprised of coaches, team executives, former players and members of the media”. Each individual voter ranks their top 10 players in order from 1–10. The point value for each position is equal to the voting panel’s maximum selection minus that position’s rank (e.g., a No. 1 ranking earns 10 points, a No. 2 ranking earn 9 points, etc.). The player(s) with the most total points—regardless of position—wins the award.
How is the NFL MVP Determined?
The NFL MVP is determined by a vote of the media members who cover the league. These voters are asked to submit their ballots at the end of the regular season, and they can only select one player per ballot. The player who receives the most votes is named the NFL MVP.
Who are the Previous NFL MVPs?
The National Football League Most Valuable Player Award (NFL MVP) is an award given by various media outlets to the American football player who is considered the most valuable in the National Football League (NFL). The winner receives the Bill Willis Trophy, named after its first recipient; among NFL players, it is considered one of the league’s highest honors.[1][2]
In recent years, the award has been commonly referred to as simply “the NFL MVP”.[3][4] The NFL began recognizing an official NFL MVP in 1961; since then, 27 different players have won the award. In 2010, quarterback Tom Brady became only the second unanimous choice for MVP in NFL history. Of the 54 total awards handed out from 1961 through 2013, only seven have been given to a member of the defense or special teams: three to defensive end Alan Page (1971, 1973, and 1976), two to linebacker Lawrence Taylor (1981 and 1986), and one each to linebacker Brian Urlacher (2005) and safety Joe Namath (1969).[5]
Between 1957 and 1960, after there was no immediately recognized “Most Outstanding Player” from either news media or fans at large – although there were sports writers’ selections – the NFF presented annually what it called its “NFL Championship Game Most Valuable Player Award”. This was an award separate from any other player recognition given by either news media or sportswriters at that time.[6]
By 1961, however – when touchdown passes as well as rushing yardage began being tabulated as statistics upon which players could be judged for this trophy – a formal “MVP” award voted on by sportswriters was instituted. It was explained thusly in an article titled “Voters Pick Namath As UPI’s Top Pro”[7] in January 1962:
“. . . After some prodding by this publication [i.e., United Press International], a few more sports departments have joined UPI in making their own choices for top pro footballer of 1961. As a result of such Hemingway-like procrastination on their part – waiting until almost everybody else has had his say before letting their readers in on their opinions – we are happy this year to see that some semblance of order may be evolving out of past chaos.”
