When Does All Star Voting End in the NBA?

It’s that time of year again when basketball fans around the world vote for their favorite players to represent their conference in the NBA All-Star Game. But when does voting end?

All-Star Voting History

All-Star voting began in the 1951-52 season. Originally, only the starters were voted on by the fans. In 1969-70, the fans were given the opportunity to vote for the reserves as well. The voting process has changed over the years, but the basic premise has remained the same: the fans vote for the players they want to see in the All-Star Game.

All-Star Voting Format

All-Star voting has undergone several changes since its inception in 1946. In the early years, both starters and reserves were chosen by vote of sportswriters and broadcasters. To give more power to the fans, a starting lineup was introduced in 1970 that was chosen solely by vote. This lasted for two seasons before returning to a system where sportswriters and broadcasters voted for the starters, while the reserves were chosen by the head coaches.

The current system, which has been in place since 1975, is a mix of both approaches: the starting lineup is still selected by fan vote, while the reserves are picked by a vote among head coaches. The fan vote makes up 50 percent of the total vote, with coaching decisions accounting for the other 50 percent.

All-Star Voting Rules

All-Star Voting Procedure

Players are selected to the All-Star teams through a voting process. The starting lineups for each team are composed of two guards, two frontcourt players, and a center. These five player positions have been used since the 1950 All-Star Game. Coaches choose the remaining 14 All-Stars. If a selected player is injured or cannot play, NBA Commissioner Adam Silver selects a replacement.

Fans were originally responsible for voting for the starting lineups, but their votes only determined half of each starting lineup. In 2016, fan voting opened on Christmas Day and ended on Martin Luther King Jr. Day (the third Monday in January). Fans were allowed to vote via traditional paper ballots and online through NBA websites and social media platforms such as Facebook and Twitter. They could vote for 10 different players per ballot, and they could select only one player per position for each conference team. The 50 players receiving the most fan votes — two guards and three frontcourt players from each conference — were named starters.

Because some fans stuff the ballot box in an effort to get their favorite players selected as starters, league officials changed the process beginning with the 2017 All-Star Game. Under the new rules, fans continue to select the starters, but their votes now count as 50 percent of the overall vote; current NBA players and a media panel will account for 25 percent each.
