When Does Baseball Season Officially Start?
It’s that time of year again! The snow is melting, the birds are chirping, and everyone’s favorite pastime is just around the corner. But when does baseball season officially start?
The Pre-Season
The pre-season is a great time to catch up on all the latest news and information about your favorite team. For some fans, it’s also the perfect opportunity to get out to the ball park and see their team in action. But when does baseball season officially start?
For most teams, the answer is late February or early March. Spring training games begin around this time, and the regular season usually starts a few weeks later. However, there are a few exceptions. The Chicago White Sox, for example, begin their spring training schedule in January. And the World Series champion Houston Astros began their 2017 season on April 2nd.
So if you’re eager to get your baseball fix, keep an eye on your team’s schedule and be sure to catch them in action during the pre-season.
Spring Training
Though baseball season may feel like it started yesterday, the official start of the season is still a few weeks away. Before the first pitch is thrown on Opening Day, every team must go through spring training.
Spring training is a series of exhibition games that allows teams to evaluate their players in game-like conditions before the start of the regular season. These games also give players a chance to shake off any rust from the long offseason and get back into playing shape.
Spring training usually lasts for about six weeks, with teams playing between 30 and 40 exhibition games. The first spring training game is typically played in early February, with Opening Day happening in late March or early April.
The Regular Season
The Major League Baseball (MLB) regular season typically runs from early April to late September, with each team playing 162 games. The regular season schedule is typically arranged so that teams play more games against divisional opponents than against teams in other divisions.
In recent years, MLB has attempted to start the regular season earlier in order to take advantage of warm weather and avoid competing with the National Football League (NFL) for attention. However, this has led to some complaints from players about the lack of time to prepare for the season.
The MLB playoffs begin in October and typically conclude with the World Series in November.
