When Does Free Agency Start In The NFL?
Wondering when free agency starts in the NFL? We’ve got you covered with all the important dates and information you need to know.
What is Free Agency?
Free agency is a period during the National Football League (NFL) when teams can sign free agents to contracts. Free agency typically begins in late February or early March, and it lasts until the start of the NFL season in September. However, the exact dates of free agency vary from year to year.
Definition of Free Agency
In professional sports, a free agent is a player who is eligible to sign with any club or franchise of their choosing, without restriction, if that player’s contract with their previous team has expired or was unilaterally terminated by theplayer.
Unrestricted Free Agents
In the NFL, free agency occurs when a player signs with a team that is not their current team. Free agency can happen in one of two ways: either the player’s contract has expired and they are now free to sign with any team, or the player has been released by their current team and is free to sign with any other team.
Players who are Unrestricted Free Agents (UFAs) have completed four or more seasons in the NFL, and their contracts have expired. They are free to sign with any team, but their former teams have the right to match any contract offer made by another team. If the player’s former team does not match the offer, they will lose the player to the other team.
Players who are Restricted Free Agents (RFAs) have completed three seasons in the NFL, and their contracts have expired. They are free to sign with any team, but their former teams have the right to match any contract offer made by another team. If the former team does not match the offer, they will receive draft pick compensation from the other team based on the size of the contract offered.
Restricted Free Agents
Restricted free agents are players with three accrued seasons who have received a qualifying offer (a minimum salary offer for the upcoming season) from their respective team. If the player signs the qualifying offer, he is immediately under contract for the upcoming season at that salary. If the player does not sign the qualifying offer and ultimately decides to play elsewhere, his old team has the right to either match the terms of his new contract, or they can receive draft-choice compensation should he sign with another team.
Free Agency Start Dates
Free agency is a time where NFL teams can negotiate with players who are not under contract. This can be a great time for teams to improve their rosters. However, it can also be a time where teams make bad decisions. Let’s take a look at the free agency start dates.
2020 Free Agency Start Date
The 2020 NFL free agency period will begin on March 18th.
2021 Free Agency Start Date
The 2021 NFL Free Agency Period will begin on March 17th. The first day of the new league year and free agency period is March 18th.
Free Agency Start Date History
The history of free agency in the NFL is a convoluted one, with various rules and regulations changing several times over the years. In the most recent collective bargaining agreement between the NFL and the NFL Players Association, free agency is defined as follows:
“Unrestricted Free Agents” are players with four or more Accrued Seasons who have received no tender from their Prior Club for the upcoming League Year. Unrestricted Free Agents are free to sign with any Club, with no compensation owed to their Prior Club, through the expiration of their current Player Contracts at 4:00 p.m. New York time on the League Year’s sixth day (March 13).
“Restricted Free Agents” are players with three Accrued Seasons who have received a Qualifying Offer from their Prior Club for the upcoming League Year. Restricted Free Agents have until 4:00 p.m. New York time on the League Year’s third day (March 10) to sign their Qualifying Offer sheet. If they do not sign their Qualifying Offer sheet by that date, they are prohibited from signing with any Club until after the conclusion of the League’s regular season on New Year’s Eve.”
In other words, unrestricted free agents are free to sign with any team they choose starting March 13, while restricted free agents can only sign with their current team or another team willing to give up draft compensation to do so.
Free Agency Process
After four years, NFL players with expiring contracts are free to sign with any team. The free agency period begins at 4:00 p.m. ET on the first day of the new league year. Teams are allowed to contact and enter into contract negotiations with the agents of players who will become free agents.
Free Agency Negotiations
Free agency negotiations can begin as early as mid-January of the year before the player’s contract is set to expire. If a team uses the franchise tag on a player, negotiations can begin immediately after the Super Bowl.
Free Agency Signings
The free agency signing period begins on the first day of the new league year, which is typically in March. Players who have been released by their teams become free agents and are able to sign with any team. Unrestricted free agents are players who have completed four or more years of their rookie contracts and are free to sign with any team. Restricted free agents are players with three or fewer years of experience who can receive offers from other teams, but their current team has the right to match any offer or receive compensation if they choose not to match.
During the free agency signing period, teams can also sign undrafted rookies to contracts. These players are not subject to the same restrictions as other free agents and can be signed to any type of contract.
Free Agency Rumors
As the NFL regular season comes to a close, fans and analysts start speculating about which players will be on the move during free agency. Free agency is when players who are not under contract with any team can sign with any team that they want.
There are a few different types of free agents:
-Unrestricted Free Agents (UFA): Any player that has completed four or more accrued seasons (a season in which six or more regular-season games were on the player’s active/inactive list) is an unrestricted free agent when their contract expires. An unrestricted free agent is free to sign with any team, with no draft-pick compensation owed to his old team.
-Restricted Free Agents (RFA): A restricted free agent has three accrued seasons and an expired contract. When a restricted free agent signs an offer sheet with another team, his old team has seven days to match the offer and keep him under contract. If the old team elects not to match the offer, they may receive draft-pick compensation depending on the size of the offer sheet.
-Exclusive Rights Free Agents (ERFA): A player with two or fewer accrued seasons is an exclusive rights free agent when their contract expires. An exclusive rights free agent can only sign a one-year contract for the league minimum salary with their old team if they are tendered a qualifying offer.
Teams can begin signing unrestricted free agents on March 18th, 2021 at 4pm EST.
Free Agency Tips
Free Agency in the NFL starts on March 11th at 4:00 p.m. EST. This is when teams can start to contact and negotiate with players who are set to become free agents. If you are a fan of a team, it is important to know when free agency starts so you can be prepared for news about your team signing or losing players. Here are some tips for you during free agency.
Free Agency Preparation
As we head into the offseason, here are a few things you can do to prepare for free agency.
1. Keep an eye on the salary cap.
The salary cap is one of the most important factors in free agency. It dictates how much teams can spend on players, and it can have a huge impact on which players are available.
2. Know your team’s needs.
Before free agency begins, it’s important to know what your team needs. This will help you target the right players and avoid overspending on areas that don’t need upgrading.
3. Stay up to date on the rumors.
Free agency is all about rumors. You’ll hear tons of them leading up to the start of free agency, and it’s important to filter out the noise and focus on the ones that are most likely to be true.
4. Prepare your offer sheets early.
If you want to sign a player during free agency, you’ll need to have an offer sheet ready to go as soon as the signing period begins. The sooner you can get your offer sheet in, the better chance you have of signing the player you want
Free Agency Strategy
The key to having a successful free agency signing is to do your research on the player you’re interested in. Just as importantly, though, is to have a budget and know your team’s needs.
It’s important to know how much money you have to spend, and what positions you need to fill. For example, if you’re looking for a wide receiver, but your team already has a lot of depth at the position, you may want to consider looking elsewhere.
You also need to be aware of the different types of contracts that players can sign. Some players may be looking for a one-year deal, while others may be looking for a long-term contract. It’s important to know what each player is looking for so that you can make the best offer possible.
Lastly, don’t forget to negotiate! Players may be asking for more money than you’re willing to pay, but if you don’t negotiate, you’ll never know what you could have gotten.

The NFL’s free agency period is a time when teams can sign unrestricted free agents from other teams. Unrestricted free agents are players who have completed four or more years of their rookie contracts, and their contracts have expired. Restricted free agents are players with three years of service whose contracts have expired. They can sign with any team, but their original team has the right to match any offer or receive draft-pick compensation if they choose not to match an offer.
During the free agency period, which runs from late February to early July, teams can also sign their own free agents, extend the contracts of players who are already under contract, and make trades.
