The NBA Finals is the championship series of the National Basketball Association (NBA). The Eastern and Western conference champions play a best-of-seven game series to determine the league champion. The winners of the Finals are awarded the Larry O’Brien Championship Trophy, which replaced the Walter A. Brown Trophy in 1983.
The series was initially known as the BAA Finals prior to the 1949–50 season when the Basketball Association of America (BAA) merged with the National Basketball League (NBL) to form the NBA. The competition oversaw further name changes throughout its early years, being known as the World Championship Series from 1950 to 1955, then as the Western Division Playoffs from 1956 to 1966. It was finally named the NBA World Championship Series from 1967 to 1974, before settling on its current name in 1975.
The Eastern Conference has provided most of the finalists in recent years: between 2013 and 2018, all but two NBA Finals were contested between teams from that conference. Examples include the Boston Celtics and Los Angeles Lakers dynasties of 1958–69 and 1984–87, respectively; as well as more recent examples such as 2010s “Big Three” era Miami Heat and Cleveland Cavaliers; and 2020s tandems such as Kawhi Leonard’s Los Angeles Clippers and LeBron James’s Los Angeles Lakers. Consequently, home court advantage in an Eastern Conference based matchup has been critical since 1983 with very few exceptions: three finals played entirely on road courts (1984, 1985, 1987), two played entirely at neutral sites (1988, 1989), and one played entirely outside of North America (1998).
In stark contrast, home court advantage in a Western Conference based matchup has been far less important since 1983: only twice have both finalists had home court advantage in their first matchup since then (2007 playoffs & 2014 playoffs), while eleven times both finalists had to start on the road since then.[1][2] Most recently in 2020, all four Western Conference teams with home court advantage in their first matchup lost: Golden State Warriors vs. Houston Rockets, Utah Jazz vs. Denver Nuggets, Oklahoma City Thunder vs. Portland Trail Blazers, and San Antonio Spurs vs. Dallas Mavericks.[3]

The event is held annually in June. It corresponds to the pre-determined schedule of when each round of the playoffs is played. While player rest is a significant factor in most other professional sports leagues, it is rare for an NBA team to have more than one or two days off between games in the playoffs; as a result, this results in some circumstances where games are played on three consecutive days. The Finals were originally intended to be held between mid-June and early July, but due to logistical issues with hosting the event (such as arena availability and scheduling conflicts with other major sporting events), it was eventually pushed back to its current date range.
