The National Football League preseason is the period each year during which NFL teams play several not-for-the-record exhibition games before the regular season starts.

Beginning with the 2020 season, the NFL preseason will be shortened from four games per team to three games. The number of preseason games has varied throughout NFL history, varying from two to eight, but four games per team became standardized in 1967.

The preseason is important for evaluating players and determining which ones will make the team’s final roster, but many fans see it as an unnecessary continuation of the sport’s long offseason.
