The NBA Finals is the championship series of the National Basketball Association (NBA). The Eastern and Western conference champions play a best-of-seven game series to determine the league champion. The winning team of the series receives the Larry O’Brien Championship Trophy.
The Finals began in 1947, when the NBA was known as the Basketball Association of America (BAA). The first Finals was played between the Philadelphia Warriors and the Chicago Stags, with the Warriors winning the series 4–1. The first Finals held under the NBA’s current name featured the Minneapolis Lakers and the New York Knicks, with the Lakers winning in five games.
Since 1947, there have been a total of 71 NBA Finals played. The Warriors and Lakers have met a record 11 times in the Finals, with each team winning six times. The two teams met in consecutive Finals from 1947 to 1954, and again from 2016 to 2020. The Boston Celtics have appeared in 21 NBA Finals, more than any other team, while winning a record 17 times.
