The Los Angeles Lakers
The Los Angeles Lakers are an American professional basketball team based in Los Angeles. The Lakers compete in the National Basketball Association (NBA), as a member of the league’s Western Conference Pacific Division. The Lakers play their home games at Staples Center, an arena shared with the NBA’s Los Angeles Clippers and the Los Angeles Sparks of the Women’s National Basketball Association. The Lakers are one of the most successful teams in the history of the NBA, and have won 16 NBA championships, the second-most behind the Boston Celtics.
The franchise began with the 1947 purchase of a disbanded team, the Detroit Gems of the National Basketball League (NBL). The new team began playing in Minneapolis, calling themselves the Minneapolis Lakers. Initially a member of the NBL, the Lakers won the 1948 NBL championship before fully joining the NBA in 1949. In 1951, led by center George Mikan, who was drafted after serving in World War II, they won their first NBA championship. They repeated as champions in 1952 despite losing Mikan for most of those playoffs to injury. After struggling financially in 1957 due to poor attendance and minimal interest in professional basketball in Minneapolis, they relocated to Los Angeles before leagues would merge years later into today’s NBA.
Led by Hall of Famers Elgin Baylor and Jerry West, Los Angeles made eight straight Finals appearances from 1961 to 1968; however, they failed to win a title during that period. In 1968, West finally succeeded Jerry West as head coach and led them to their first ever Finals victory over their cross-town rivals, despite not having home court advantage due to losing records that season against Eastern contenders Baltimore and Boston. After acquiring Kareem Abdul-Jabbar prior to 1974/75 season to team up with fellow Hall of Famer Magic Johnson during his rookie year out of Michigan State led them back into prominence winning back-to-back titles in 1987 and 1988 followed by another where they upset Byron Scott’s defending champion “Showtime” era Lakers team sweeping them in four games despite being outscored by an average margin of 12 points per game during those Finals en route to their first ever three-peat which included a fourth title over Scott’s Cavaliers teams in 1991 which proved to be final championship while playing together while Scott would get his revenge years later winning three straight titles from 2000–2002 including two more against O’Neal and Bryant but this time with Shaq playing for him on those champion teams vs his former teammates who he feuded with leading up and during his final two seasons with L.A.. After losing out on re-signing O’Neal following their 2004 run which ended short against eventual champion Detroit Pistons due to injuries that sidelined Bryant for much of that playoff run combined with Karl Malone retiring prior to coming back for one final season with Kobe & Co. which resulted him tearing his ACL & PCL during Game 4 at Staples Center prior which foreshadowed their eventual lost vs eventual champion San Antonio Spurs being swept aside due largely due much like Detroit had done four years earlier exploiting Laker deficiencies being forced to play small ball lineup which wasn’t ideally suited for post season competition where they eventually got swept aside much like they did four years earlier while getting swept aside by San Antonio much like Detroit had done four years earlier..
