What is NFL Cut Day?
In the National Football League (NFL), the final roster cuts to reduce the team’s size to the league-mandated 53 players must take place by 4:00 p.m. EDT on the Saturday prior to the start of the regular season.Teams are required to submit their initial 53-man roster by that afternoon, and they may begin signing 10-player practice squads shortly thereafter.
The day after cut day is typically referred to as “Black Monday” in the NFL, as it is generally when a large number of NFL head coaches are fired.
When is NFL Cut Day?
The date of NFL Cut Day is usually the day after the last pre-season game. However, this date can vary slightly from year to year. For example, in 2017 NFL Cut Day was on September 2nd, but in 2018 it was on September 1st.
During NFL Cut Day, all teams must reduce their rosters from a maximum of 90 players to a minimum of 53 players. This means that 37 players will be cut from each team on Cut Day.
Players who are cut on Cut Day can sometimes be signed to the team’s practice squad. The practice squad is a group of 10 players who practice with the team but do not play in games.
Players who are not on the practice squad become free agents and can sign with any team that wants them.
Who is Affected by NFL Cut Day?
Any NFL player who is on a team’s roster as of 4 p.m. on the Tuesday following the final preseason game is considered to have made the team and is eligible to play in the upcoming season. Players who are cut from the roster after that time are considered free agents and are free to sign with any team in the league.
