NHL All-Star Game History
The NHL All-Star Game is an annual event that takes place during the NHL season. The game features the best players from each team playing against each other. The game began in 1947 and has been held every year since then, with the exception of 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
First game was held in 1947
The first NHL All-Star Game was held on October 13, 1947, at Maple Leaf Gardens in Toronto, two months after the start of the 1947–48 NHL season. The game was organized in meetings between League officials and was aimed at promoting the sport of hockey and generating revenues for the League. The absence of many top players led to a lack of interest in the game. Fans in attendance booed throughout most of the game, and there were only 6,000 spectators on hand to watch the game, which was played during the day. A record low 2.6 rating was recorded for the game’s television broadcast on CBC.
Last game was held in 2020
In spite of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the NHL All-Star game was held in St. Louis on January 25, 2020. Fans voted for the four team captains, who then chose their teams from a pool of 42 All-Stars. The four captains were Edmonton Oilers’ center Connor McDavid, Carolina Hurricanes’ defenseman Justin Faulk, Colorado Avalanche’s Nathan MacKinnon, and St. Louis Blues’ David Perron.
This year’s game was a 3-on-3 tournament, with each game being 20 minutes long. The four teams were split into two divisions: the Central Division (made up of the Blues, Faulk’s Hurricanes, MacKinnon’s Avalanche, and Perron’s Blues) and the Pacific Division (comprised of McDavid’s Oilers, the Anaheim Ducks, Calgary Flames, Edmonton Oilers, Los Angeles Kings, San Jose Sharks and Vancouver Canucks). In the first round of games, the Central Division beat the Pacific Divisions 9–5 and 8–4 respectively. In the final round, Faulk’s Hurricanes defeated MacKinnon’s Avalanche 2–1 to take home the title.
