When Is The Baseball Playoffs?
The baseball playoffs are an annual tournament that determines the World Series champion.
October 2-4
The baseball playoffs will take place on October 2-4.
Wild Card Games
For the two years following the 2012 Major League Baseball season, there were two wild card teams per league. The two wild card teams from each league faced each other in a one-game playoff to determine who would advance to the Division Series.
In 2014, MLB expanded the playoffs to include a second wild card team in each league, giving playoff berths to four teams from each league instead of the traditional three. The two wild card teams in each league now play each other in a best-of-three series, with the winner advancing to play the division champion with the better record in the Division Series.
Divisional Series
The baseball playoffs begin with the Divisional Series. This is a best-of-five series between the two division winners from each league. The team with the better record plays at home for Games 1, 2, and 5 (if necessary); the other team hosts Games 3 and 4 (if necessary).
League Championship Series
The League Championship Series (ALCS and NLCS) is a best-of-seven series played in October after the Division Series to determine who will represent the American and National Leagues in the World Series.
World Series
The World Series is the annual championship series of Major League Baseball (MLB) in North America, played between the American League (AL) champion team and the National League (NL) champion team. The winner of the World Series championship is determined through a best-of-seven playoff, and the winning team is awarded the Commissioner’s Trophy. As the series is played during the fall season in North America, it is sometimes referred to as the Fall Classic.
