When Is The Major League Baseball Season Going To Start?
Contents
It’s official! Major League Baseball has announced the start of the 2020 season. Here’s everything you need to know.
Why the Delay?
The 2020 Major League Baseball season was supposed to start on March 26th. However, due to the outbreak of the coronavirus, the season has been postponed. The players and the owners have not been able to come to an agreement on when the season should start. The players want to start the season in May, but the owners want to wait until June.
COVID-19
The 2020 Major League Baseball season was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The decision was made by MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred on April 2, 2020, after a recommendation from the CDC to not hold sporting events with more than 50 people for at least eight weeks. The season was originally supposed to start on March 26, but was pushed back to April 9 due to the pandemic.
As of May 21, Manfred said that he was “optimistic” that the season would start sometime in July, but he stressed that it was “not a hard deadline.” On June 23, MLB and the MLBPA came to an agreement that would allow the season to start on July 23 or 24.
The agreement includes several health and safety protocols, such as:
-Players will be tested for COVID-19 every other day
-There will be a 60-game regular season
-There will be expanded playoffs, with 16 teams instead of 10
-Players will receive their full prorated salaries for the 60-game season
Other Reasons
There are a few other reasons that the MLB season has been delayed. One is that the league wants to stagger start dates so that not every team is playing at the same time. This would help limit the spread of the virus if there were any positive cases among players.
Another reason for the delay is that some state and local governments are still not allowing large gatherings, which would make it difficult for teams to play in front of fans. And finally, many minor league baseball players are still without jobs because their season was cancelled entirely. The MLB needs to figure out how to accommodate them before starting their own season.
When Will the Season Start?
MLB Proposals
As the COVID-19 pandemic continues to wreak havoc across the United States, MLB officials are scrambling to figure out when — and how — to start the 2020 season.
The most recent proposal, which was presented to team owners on Monday, calls for a shortened regular season of between 89 and 93 games, followed by an expanded postseason that would include as many as 16 teams.
The plan would have players reporting to spring training camps in early July, with the regular season beginning either on July 23 or 24. The postseason would then begin in early October and conclude around Halloween.
While the proposal appears to have support from a majority of owners, it is not without its detractors. Some small-market teams are concerned about the economic impact of playing in empty stadiums, while others are worried that a shorter season will devalue the product.
MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred is reportedly working on a contingency plan that would call for even more radical changes, including eliminating divisions and holding a World Series in November at a neutral site.
With time running out, it remains to be seen whether MLB will be able to come up with a plan that satisfies all 30 teams. But one thing is certain: The 2020 season will be unlike any other in baseball history.
Players’ Association
The Major League Baseball Players’ Association (MLBPA) is the trade union for all professional baseball players of the Major League Baseball (MLB) in the United States and Canada. All players in MLB belong to the MLBPA. The MLBPA has offices in New York City and Washington, D.C.
The current executive director of the MLBPA is Tony Clark, who succeeded Michael Weiner in December 2013. It was formed in 1954 as the Major League Baseball Players’Association. The MLBPAA was formed when Baltimore Orioles player Bob Boyd proposed the idea to New York Yankees player Jimmy Keyes while they were teammates on a Minor League Baseball team in Apopka, Florida during spring training in 1953. It replaced the National Association of Base Ball Players (NABBP) which had served as the union from 1858 to 1885 but had become increasingly ineffective due to baseball’s growth since that time. Marvin Miller, executive director from 1966 to 1982, was the MLPBA’s first real leader and negotiated two landmark collective bargaining agreements (CBAs) with owners that changed baseball. In 1968, all-star players elected Donald Fehr their president; he served until 1983 when he was succeeded by Ken Boyer. Boyer led another strike on behalf ofthe players in 1985 which resulted in a revised CBA governing free agency and salary arbitration that exist today, although it expired following the 1993 season but continues on a year-to-year basis as part of an agreement reached during that same strike; this agreement also created revenue sharing amongst teams and instituted a luxury tax to slow salary escalation.[1]
In 2000, Gene Orza became chief operating officer during Fehr’s tenure as executive director and served as his second-in-command until his retirement in 2011; Orza remained with MLBPA until 2015 as special counsel before resigning amid accusations he mishandled evidence related to performance enhancing drugs
How Will the Season Look?
The Major League Baseball (MLB) season is set to begin on April 1, 2021. The season was originally supposed to start on March 26, but was pushed back due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The season will be 60 games long, instead of the usual 162 games. This shortened season will have some changes to how the games are played. Let’s take a look at what we can expect from the MLB season.
Regular Season
Opening Day for the 2020 Major League Baseball season is Thursday, March 26. The World Series is scheduled to end on October 28. There are 162 games in the regular season, which is scheduled to end on September 27. The playoffs will begin on October 1 and end no later than October 28.
Postseason
October baseball is the best baseball. The players are fatigued from a long season, the weather is turning cold, and every game matters. The MLB postseason is a month-long tournament to determine the best team in baseball.
The postseason consists of the Wild Card Game, the Division Series, the League Championship Series, and the World Series. The Wild Card Game is a one-game playoff between the two teams with the best record who did not win their division. The division series is a best-of-five series between the division winners. The League Championship Series is a best-of-seven series between the winners of the division series. The World Series is a best of seven series between the winners of each League Championship Series.
In order to make the playoffs, teams have to win their division or have one of the two best records among all non-division winners (the Wild Card teams). In recent years, Major League Baseball has expanded its playoffs to include more teams. In 2012, there were 10 teams in the playoffs: 3 division winners and 2 wild card teams from each league. In 2014, that number increased to 12 teams: 4 division winners and 2 wild card teams from each league.
Major League Baseball has not released its schedule for the 2020 season yet, but it typically starts in late March or early April and ends in October.
What About the Fans?
Major League Baseball has been one of America’s most beloved sports for generations. But with the COVID-19 pandemic raging across the country, the start of the season is shrouded in uncertainty. While the league and the players’ union have been in talks about how to start the season safely, there has been no word on when or if the season will start. This leaves fans in a difficult position.
MLB’s Plan
With baseball’s regular season currently on hold due to the COVID-19 pandemic, MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred has been working tirelessly to try and get the season up and running as soon as possible.
While no official start date has been set, a recent report from ESPN’s Buster Olney stated that “Manfred is increasingly focused on getting baseball back in early July.” This would obviously be great news for baseball fans everywhere, but it remains to be seen if this timeline is actually achievable.
There are still a lot of logistical hurdles to clear before any kind of season could begin, but it does appear that MLB is committed to doing whatever it takes to get fans back in the stands as soon as possible. So for now, we can all just sit tight and hope that baseball returns sooner rather than later.
Players’ Association
So, the baseball season is set to begin in late July, but what about the fans? The MLB is still working on plans to ensure the safety of fans in attendance, but it’s looking like most, if not all, games will be played without fans in the stands. That’s a tough pill to swallow for many baseball fans, but it’s probably the best decision for everyone involved.
The MLB Players’ Association (MLBPA) is the union that represents all players in Major League Baseball. The MLBPA was founded in 1954 and has been incredibly important in protecting the rights of players and ensuring fair treatment. In recent years, the MLBPA has also been working hard to increase fan safety at stadiums.
The MLBPA has not yet released a statement on fan safety for the 2020 season, but they are surely aware of the concerns and are likely working with the MLB to ensure that fans will be safe if they do attend games.
