Criteria for Eligibility

Players are also eligible if they have been retired for at least two full seasons and have been voted in by the Veterans Committee. The process of being selected for the Hall of Fame is based on votes from a committee of 24 basketball experts.

As of the induction of the Class of 2020 on September 18, 2020, the Hall has honored 354 individuals and groups from multiple activities and leagues for their contributions to the sport of basketball. Of those 354 people honored, 44 have been inducted posthumously (through 2020). Players who have been retired for at least three years are eligible for induction; players who have been retired for fewer than three years must have played at least 10 seasons to be considered eligible.

The Committee on Inductees meets each year prior to the Hall of Fame’s annual induction ceremonies to discuss new candidates and decide which, if any, deserve enshrinement. The committee is composed of between 12 and 18 members (including a chairman), most former players or coaches or officials in the sport; they must represent all regions of the country. Each member may nominate up to two players per year: if multiple members nominate a player, he must receive votes from at least eight members to be considered for induction.

The induction ceremony for the Class of 2020 was originally scheduled to take place on August 29, 2020; however, due to the COVID-19 pandemic in North America, the ceremony was postponed until September 18 so that it could be held as a virtual event.
