The NBA’s Future
The National Basketball Association (NBA) is a men’s professional basketball league in North America, composed of 30 teams (29 in the United States and 1 in Canada). It is widely considered to be the premier men’s professional basketball league in the world. The NBA is an active member of USA Basketball (USAB), which is recognized by FIBA (also known as the International Basketball Federation) as the national governing body for basketball in the United States. NBA players are the world’s best paid athletes by average annual salary per player.
The league was founded in New York City on June 6, 1946, as the Basketball Association of America (BAA). The BAA took its name from the original organization of 13 teams that competed in that league from its inception to August 3, 1949, when it merged with the National Basketball League (NBL) to form the NBA. On August 3, 1949, three years after both leagues had started, they merged into one unified basketball league: The National Basketball Association. In 1950, at 33 years old, NBA Commissioner George Mikan stepped down due to poor health and RegionalPublisher Jim Norris was appointed as his replacement; Norris remained Commissioner until his death on April 7 1968. Rod Thorn became President of Basketball Operations on July 11 1984; he would be replaced by NBA Entertainment presidentMichael Jordan on February 5 1999.
The current commissioner of the NBA is Adam Silver, who replaced David Stern on February 1 2014. Stern had served as commissioner for 30 years since 1984; making him both longest-serving major sports commissioner and longest-tenured NBA commissioner in history. 70%of NBA players are African American, while international players make up 17%of the league. During World War II it became more difficult to find able bodies to play professional basketball and this resulted in a lowering of talent level across all organized leagues; manyplayers left organized basketball to enlist inthe military or work inthe war effort industries full-time instead leading to lower overall demand for professional basketball during this time.
