The First WWE Survivor Series
The first WWE Survivor Series was held on Thanksgiving Day in 1987. The brainchild of WWE CEO Vince McMahon, the event was designed to be a response to the growing popularity of Ted Turner’s World Championship Wrestling (WCW) and its flagship show, Starrcade.
While the original Survivor Series was not a commercial success, it did establish the “survival of the fittest” theme that would become synonymous with the event. In the years that followed, the Survivor Series would become one of WWE’s Big Four pay-per-view events, along with WrestleMania, Royal Rumble, and SummerSlam.
The Second WWE Survivor Series
The Second WWE Survivor Series was held on Thanksgiving Night, November 26, 1987 at Richfield Coliseum in Richfield, Ohio. The event was originally scheduled to take place at the Joe Louis Arena in Detroit, Michigan, but due to poor ticket sales, the venue was changed. This was the first year that the Survivor Series was held on pay-per-view.
The tagline for the event was “Thanksgiving Tradition”. The logo for the event featured a turkey wearing sunglasses and a WWE Championship belt. The official theme song for the event was “Survive” by Mister Mister.
In the main event, Hulk Hogan and André the Giant faced off against each other in a rematch from WrestleMania III. Hogan won the match after bodyslamming André.
The Third WWE Survivor Series
The Third WWE Survivor Series took place on November 27, 1988 at the Rosemont Horizon in Chicago, Illinois. The tagline for the event was “Chicago Cares!” as it was held to raise money for the Make-A-Wish Foundation. This was the first Survivor Series to be held outside of New York City.
The main event saw Hulk Hogan and Brutus Beefcake take on Ted DiBiase and Andre the Giant (with Virgil in their corner) in a tag team match. Other matches on the card included The Blue Blazer (Owen Hart) taking on The Red Rooster (Terry Taylor), The Powers of Pain (Warlord and Barbarian) vs. The Rockers (Shawn Michaels and Marty Jannetty) and The Big Boss Man vs. Akeem (One Half of The Twin Towers).
The Third WWE Survivor Series is notable for being the first ever pay-per-view event to feature a match between two women, as Sensational Sherri took on Rockin’ Robin.

The event will feature two traditional Survivor Series matches, as well as a number of other matches and segments.
