The BAA’s first season began one month later, with 11 teams playing a 60-game schedule.
The BAA eventually merged with the National Basketball League (NBL) in 1949 to form the NBA. The NBA’s first game was played on October 29, 1949, between the New York Knicks and the Tri-Cities Blackhawks. The league has since undergone several expansions and renovations, most recently adding two new teams – the Charlotte Hornets and Miami Heat – in 1988.
