Origins of Tennis

Early ball games

The origins of tennis date back several thousand years. Early ball games were played by various cultures around the world, including the Egyptians, Greeks, and Romans. The game of tennis is thought to have originated in England in the 12th or 13th century.

One of the earliest references to tennis is found in a French manuscript from 1340, which describes a game called jeu de paume (literally, “game of the palm”). This is thought to be the first reference to the game we now know as tennis. In jeu de paume, players would hit a ball back and forth with their hands, similar to how baseball is played today.

The game began to take on its modern form in the late 16th century. rackets were introduced, and the game became known as racket- ball or sphairistike (Greek for “skill at playing at ball”). In 1874, Major Walter Clopton Wingfield patented a game he called “Sphairistike or Lawn Tennis”, which was designed to be played on an outdoor court. This was the first time that the word “tennis” was used in reference to the game.

11th century France

Royal Tennis Court

The popularity of sphairistike declined after Wingfield failed to copyright it, but it did pave the way for future racket sports such as badminton and squash.

Modern Tennis

During most of the 19th century, in fact, the term “tennis” referred to real tennis, not lawn tennis.

Since the Australian Open shifted to hard courts in 1988, Wimbledon is the only major still played on grass.
