It was televised nationally by ESPN. This draft was the first ever to be conducted entirely through an online virtual platform after the traditional paper-based method was used since its inception in 1947; it was also the first draft to use a new lottery system to determine the draft order since 1985 and implemented changes to prevents tanking. Those changes were approved by a vote of the league’s Board of Governors one week prior to the draft. Deandre Ayton from Arizona was selected first overall by the Phoenix Suns as the consensus top prospect in the class; he became just fourth player from an NCAA Division I school ever to be selected as number one overall without previously being consensus collegiate player of the year or winning any significant individual award in college, joining LaRue Martin (1972), Joe Smith (1995), and Andrea Bargnani (2006).
