A look at when the NBA season was cancelled and how it has affected the league and its players.

When Was The NBA Season Cancelled?

Introduction

The NBA season was cancelled on October 14th, 2014 after multiple failed attempts to reach a new collective bargaining agreement between the league and the player’s union. The previous agreement had been in place since 2005 and was set to expire on June 30th, 2017. The new agreement would have needed to be ratified by both sides in order to take effect.

The main issues that needed to be addressed were the split of basketball-related income, solo player salaries, and the age limit for entering the NBA draft. The league wanted players to take a 50-50 split of basketball related income, while the player’s union was only willing to accept a 47% split. The average salary for an NBA player is approximately $5 million dollars, with the top players earning over $20 million per year.

The owners also wanted to institute a hard salary cap, which would have limited each team’s spending on player salaries. The union resisted this proposal, as it would have hindered a player’s ability to earn their true market value. Currently, there is a soft salary cap in place which allows teams to exceed the cap by using certain exceptions, such as the luxury tax.

The final issue that needed to be resolved was the age limit for entering the NBA draft. The league wanted to raise the age limit from 19 to 20 years old, while the union wanted to keep it at 19 years old. The union believed that raising the age limit would hurt players who were not ready for the NBA physically or emotionally, and that they should have the opportunity to enter the draft if they so choose.

In the end, both sides could not come to an agreement on these key issues and decided to cancel the season. This was only the second time in NBA history that a season had been cancelled; the first time was during the 1998-1999 season when a lockout lasted 6 months and eventually forced a 50-game season.

The NBA Season is Cancelled

The 2020 NBA season was cancelled on March 11th, 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This was the first time in NBA history that the season was cancelled. The decision was made after multiple players tested positive for the virus.

The NBA Board of Governors Meet

On October 23, 1955, the National Basketball Association (NBA) Board of Governors met to discuss the league’s future. The board was made up of representatives from all eight NBA teams. At the time, the NBA was in its 10th season. The board decided to cancel the remainder of the 1955-56 season.

The NBA Season is Postponed

On Wednesday, the NBA became the first major professional sports league in the United States to halt its season amid the coronavirus pandemic.

The move came a day after the Utah Jazz player Rudy Gobert tested positive for COVID-19, the disease caused by the virus.

The NBA said in a statement that “the health and safety of our players, employees and everyone connected to our game is paramount”

It added that it would use the “interim period” to determine how to proceed with the rest of the season.

Aftermath of the Cancelled Season

It has been 4 months since the NBA season was abruptly cancelled. The season was cancelled on March 11th, 2020, after Rudy Gobert of the Utah Jazz tested positive for COVID-19. Since then, the world has changed drastically. Sports have been one of the many things that have been put on hold due to the pandemic.

The NBA Draft

The 2020 NBA Draft was originally scheduled to take place on June 25, 2020. However, on April 13, 2020, it was announced that the draft would be postponed until October 16, 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The date was later moved again to November 18, 2020.

Free Agency

Although the NBA season was cut short, this does not mean the offseason has been put on hold. In fact, the offseason is set to begin on October 18th. This is when teams can start signing free agents, making trades, and planning for the 2020-2021 season.

There are a few notable free agents this year, including Anthony Davis, Kawhi Leonard, and Jimmy Butler. It will be interesting to see where these players end up, as well as how much money they will command in their new contracts.

The NBA Draft will also be held (virtually) on October 16th. This is when teams will select the best young talent from around the world in hopes of building a dynasty for years to come.

It’s unclear what next season will look like, but one thing is for sure: the offseason is still very much underway.

The 2020-2021 NBA Season

The 2020-2021 NBA season was intended to be the 75th season of the National Basketball Association (NBA). The season was planned to begin on December 1, 2020, and end with the 2021 NBA Finals in July 2021. However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the season was postponed on October 6, 2020, until further notice. On March 11, 2021, it was announced that the season would resume on March 16.
