The Early Years

By the early 1900s, professional football had become extremely popular, with teams such as the Massillon Tigers and Canton Bulldogs regularly attracting large crowds of fans. In response to this popularity, several rival leagues were formed, including the American Football League (AFL) and the National Football League (NFL).
The AFL was founded in 1902 and rapidly grew to become one of the most popular sports leagues in the country. However, it wasn’t until 1920 that the NFL was formed. This league quickly became the dominant force in professional football, with only a handful of teams remaining in the AFL by 1926.
The First NFL Game
On November 22, 1869, Rutgers and Princeton played what was billed as the first college football game. However, it wasn’t until November 26, 1876 that a group of college representatives met in New York City to formulate the rules for what would become the sport of football.
