The National Football League was founded in 1920 as the American Professional Football Association.
The Early Years of Football
The National Football League, or NFL, is the professional American football league. It was formed in 1920 as the American Professional Football Association before renaming itself the National Football League for the 1922 season. The NFL consisted of 14 teams in its initial season.
The first ever football game
The first ever football game is thought to have been played in 1869 between Princeton and Rutgers University. It was a low-scoring game, with Rutgers winning 6-4. However, it wasn’t until the 1880s that college football started to become truly popular, with a number of different schools adopting their own rules and regulations.
In 1892, the first professional football league was founded, known as the Allegheny Athletic Association. However, it wasn’t until 1920 that the National Football League (NFL) was established, with teams from all across the United States. Since then, the sport has gone from strength to strength and is now one of the most popular in the world.
The first professional football game
The first professional football game was played on November 12, 1892, between the Allegheny Athletic Association and the Pittsburgh Athletic Club. William (Pudge) Heffelfinger was paid $500 to play for the Allegheny Athletic Association, making him the first professional football player.
The game was played in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania at Allegheny Park. The Allegheny Athletic Association won the game 4-0. This professional football game occurred just one year after the introduction of professional baseball.
Interestingly enough, there were two more games played between these same two teams before the end of 1892. In total, three professional football games were played in 1892; all three were won by the Allegheny Athletic Association.
The Birth of the NFL
The first NFL game
The first NFL game was played on October 3, 1920, between the Decatur Staleys and the Chicago Cardinals. The Staleys won by a score of 7-6. The game was not without controversy, as there were two different teams that claimed to be the rightful Cardinals. In the end, it was the team from Chicago that took the field.
While this may have been the first NFL game, professional football had been played for years before this. The American Professional Football Association, which would eventually become the NFL, was founded in 1920. This league was a direct response to the growing popularity of professional football. There were already several professional football teams in existence, but they were not organized under one umbrella organization.
The founding of the NFL coincided with a period of enormous growth for professional football. In just its second season, the league had 19 teams. By its fourth season, that number had nearly doubled to 34 teams. Today, there are 32 teams in the NFL.
The first NFL championship game
On December 17, 1932, the NFL held its first championship game at Wrigley Field in Chicago. The game, which featured the Boston Braves (now the Washington Redskins) and the Chicago Bears, was officiated by two NFL officials and two from the Big Ten Conference. The game was a sellout, with an official attendance of 21,283.
The game was not televised, but there were some radio broadcasts of it. After the game, NFL Commissioner Pete Rozelle said that it was “a great day for professional football.” The Bears won the game 9-7.
The Modern NFL
The National Football League (NFL) was founded in 1920 as the American Professional Football Association (APFA) with ten teams from four states, all of whom existed in some form as participants of regional leagues or football organizations. The NFL thus became the first professional football league.
The first Super Bowl
The first Super Bowl was played on January 15, 1967. The Green Bay Packers defeated the Kansas City Chiefs by a score of 35-10.
The first NFL draft
The first NFL draft was held in 1936, and it has been held annually ever since. The draft is a process by which teams select new players to join their roster. It is an important event in the NFL calendar, and it is one of the ways in which teams can improve their squad for the upcoming season.
The draft takes place over a number of days, and each team has a set amount of time to make their pick. The order in which teams pick is decided by a number of factors, including their win-loss record from the previous season and whether they have made the playoffs.
There are seven rounds in the NFL draft, and each team gets one pick in each round. In recent years, there has been an additional “compensatory” round added for teams who have lost more free agents than they have signed.
The draft is always an exciting time for fans, as it gives them a chance to see who their team will be picking and what new talent will be coming into the league. It is also a time of great speculation and many rumors, as everyone tries to predict who will go where.
