Contents
The National Football League was started in August 20, 1920. The NFL was originally called the American Professional Football Association (APFA).
The Early Years of the NFL
The National Football League, or NFL, was established in 1920, but its roots trace back to 1892. The NFL was originally founded as the American Professional Football Association (APFA). In 1922, the APFA changed its name to the National Football League. The NFL is the oldest professional football league in the United States.
The first NFL game
The first NFL game was played on October 3, 1920, between the Dayton Triangles and the Columbus Panhandles in Dayton, Ohio. The game ended in a 14-0 victory for the Triangles, who were coached by player-coach Earl “Curly” Lambeau. The league’s first season was marred by a players’ strike that caused the cancellation of two games; however, the league quickly recovered and continued to grow in popularity throughout the 1920s.
During the 1930s and 1940s, the NFL saw a decline in popularity due to competition from college football and baseball. However, the league made a comeback in the 1950s with the help of new rules that opened up the game and increased scoring. The 1950s also saw the rise of some of the NFL’s most iconic players, such as quarterback Johnny Unitas and wide receiver Raymond Berry.
The 1960s brought more changes to the NFL, including expansion teams and new divisions. The league also implemented a number of rule changes to improve player safety, including banning illegal Use (of) hands to blocks below the waist on defense
and instituting penalties for roughing the passer. These changes helped make football a safer and more exciting game to watch, which led to even more growth in popularity throughout the 1960s and 1970s.
The first NFL season
The first NFL season began in 1920 with 14 teams. The league was originally divided into two divisions, the Eastern and the Western, with each division having seven teams. The teams that make up the NFL today are very different from the ones that made up the league in its early years. In fact, only two teams that were in the league in 1920 are still in existence today: the Chicago Bears and the Decatur Staleys (now the Chicago Bears).
The Merger
In 1920, the American Professional Football Association was founded in Canton, Ohio. The Association was created by eleven teams in order to protect players’ salaries and to resolve other issues within the league. In 1922, the Association was renamed the National Football League. In 1932, the NFL merged with the American Football League.
The AFL-NFL merger
The first ever AFL-NFL World Championship game was held on January 15, 1967. This game, later to be known as the Super Bowl, was between the Green Bay Packers and the Kansas City Chiefs. The Packers won this game 35-10. Less than a month later, on February 8, 1967, the AFL and NFL formally announced their merger agreement. In 1970, the first official season of the AFC and NFC playing each other began.
The first Super Bowl
On January 15, 1967, the first Super Bowl was played between the Green Bay Packers and the Kansas City Chiefs. The Packers won easily, 35-10. This game was originally called the “AFL-NFL World Championship Game.” The name “Super Bowl” was coined by Lamar Hunt, owner of the Kansas City Chiefs. He got the idea from watching his kids play with a Super Ball.
