National Hockey League, professional ice hockey league established in 1917 by Canada’s major professional hockey teams. The NHL emerged from a series of disputes between the owners of Canada’s premier amateur teams and officials of the Canadian Amateur Hockey Association (CAHA). Dr. David Gould, a Montreal dentist who had played hockey at McGill University, drew up a proposal for a new professional league that would be governed by its own rules and regulations. The CAHA heavily opposed the formation of the NHL, but was eventually forced to grant permission when the owners threatened to withdraw their teams from CAHA competitions.

The NHL’s predecessor was the National Hockey Association (NHA)

The National Hockey Association (NHA), founded in 1909, was the predecessor of the National Hockey League (NHL). The NHA was created to eliminate legal challenges to the Stanley Cup’s legitimacy. The three Canadian teams of the NHL – Montreal Canadiens, Ottawa Senators and the Toronto Maple Leafs – were all members of the NHA. Frank Calder was named first president of the NHL in 1926.
