When is the announcement?
The date for when the NBA will announce the Rookie of the Year has not been announced yet. However, it is typically announced sometime in the summer.
What is the criteria for the award?
The Rookie of the Year award is given to the most outstanding first-year player in the NBA. A panel of sportswriters and broadcasters votes on the award, and the winner is announced at the end of the regular season.
To be eligible for the award, a player must be 19 years old or younger on opening night of the season, and he must not have played more than two seasons in any professional basketball league before.
Who are the finalists?
The three finalists for the 2020 NBA Rookie of the Year are Anthony Edwards of the Minnesota Timberwolves, LaMelo Ball of the Charlotte Hornets, and Tyrese Haliburton of the Sacramento Kings.
Edwards, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2020 NBA Draft, averaged 19.1 points, 5.0 rebounds and 2.8 assists per game during his rookie season. Ball, the No. 3 overall pick in the 2020 NBA Draft, averaged 15.7 points, 6.1 assists and 5.9 rebounds per game during his rookie season. Haliburton, the No. 12 overall pick in the 2020 NBA Draft, averaged 13.0 points, 3.5 rebounds and 5.3 assists per game during his rookie season.
The winner of the 2020 NBA Rookie of the Year award will be announced on June 24th during the NBA Awards Show on TNT at 9:00 PM ET.
Who are the past winners?
The National Basketball Association’s (NBA) Rookie of the Year Award is an annual award given to the top rookie(s) of the regular season. Initiated following the 1952–53 NBA season, it confers the Eddie Gottlieb Trophy, named after a former president of the NBA’s precursor organization, the Basketball Association of America (BAA). The winner is selected by a panel of United States and Canadian sportswriters and broadcasters, each casting first, second, and third place votes. The player(s) with the highest point total, regardless of the number of first-place votes, wins the award.
Since its inception, the Rookie of the Year Award has been given to 30 different players. It is unique among all of the major professional sports leagues in North America in that it takes into account both a player’s individual achievements and his team’s success while he was playing. Bobby Portis, Kristaps Porziņģis, Malcolm Brogdon have all won for winning just 26 games. Jason Kidd holds the record for most wins by a rookie year winner; he won 55 games in his 1994–95 rookie year for Dallas.
Wilt Chamberlain holds several all-time records for rookies including being both one of only two rookies (along with Oscar Robertson) to average 30 or more points per game and lead his team in scoring (Chamberlain did both during his 1960–61 rookie year), as well as being one of only three rookies (joining Robertson and Dave Bing) to average 20 or more rebounds per game (Chamberlain averaged 27.3 during his 1960–61 rookie season)—no other rookie has averaged 20 rebounds per game since Bill Russell did so during his 1956–57 rookie campaign.
