When Will The NBA MVP Be Announced?
The NBA will announce its MVP for the 2019-20 season on Friday, August 21. The award will be given out during a virtual ceremony.
When is the announcement?
The National Basketball Association (NBA) Most Valuable Player Award is an annual National Basketball Association (NBA) award given since the 1955–56 season to the best performing player of the regular season. The winner receives the Maurice Podoloff Trophy, which is named in honor of the first commissioner (then president) of the NBA, who served from 1946 until his retirement in 1963. Until 2011, the MVP was selected by a vote of NBA players. Since 2012, a panel of sportswriters and broadcasters throughout the United States and Canada has been entrusted with voting for the award.
The most recent recipient of the award is Giannis Antetokounmpo of the Milwaukee Bucks.
Who are the finalists?
The three finalists for the NBA MVP this season are Giannis Antetokounmpo of the Milwaukee Bucks, James Harden of the Houston Rockets, and Paul George of the Oklahoma City Thunder. All three players had incredible seasons, but only one can take home the trophy.
The announcement will be made on Monday, June 24th during the NBA Awards show. This is the second year in a row that Giannis has been a finalist for MVP, and he is looking to become the first player since Steve Nash in 2006 to win back-to-back MVPs.
George had a career year averaging 28 points, 8 rebounds, and 4 assists per game. He shot a career-high 47% from the field and 41% from three-point range. George was also named Defensive Player of the Year, making him just the second player in NBA history to win both awards in the same season (Michael Jordan was the other).
Harden averaged a league-leading 36 points per game to go along with 7 assists and 6 rebounds. He also became just the second player in NBA history to average at least 36 points per game while shooting over 35% from three-point range (joining Steph Curry).
It will be a close race, but it is hard to bet against Giannis Antetokounmpo. He led his team to the best record in the NBA and was arguably their most important player on both ends of the floor.
What are the odds?
The winner of the NBA MVP award is determined by a vote of sportswriters and broadcasters throughout the United States and Canada, making it one of the most prestigious awards in all of professional basketball.
In recent years, the MVP award has been dominated by players from the Western Conference, with only two players from the East winning the award since 2006. LeBron James of the Cleveland Cavaliers is the most recent MVP from the East, having won the award in 2013 and 2016.
The favorite to win this year’s MVP award is Giannis Antetokounmpo of the Milwaukee Bucks, who is also the favorite to win Defensive Player of the Year.
