Contents
It’s been a rough few days for NBA 2K20 players. On Tuesday, servers for the game were abruptly shut down, leaving many players unable to play. Here’s what you need to know about the NBA 2K20 server shutdown.
NBA 2K20 Server Shutdown
NBA 2K20 was released on September 6, 2019, and since then, the game has been plagued with server issues. The game’s server would often shut down, preventing players from being able to play the game. The server shutdowns became so frequent that players began to call for a refund of the game. On April 7, 2020, 2K finally announced that they would be shutting down the servers for NBA 2K20.
What You Need to Know
It’s been a tough few weeks for NBA 2K20 players. First, there was the controversy surrounding the game’s new MyPlayer mode. Then, server issues began popping up, preventing players from accessing online features. Now, it appears that the servers are going down for good.
On Tuesday, 2K Games announced that NBA 2K20 servers will be shutting down on Thursday, Dec. 31. This means that all online modes — including MyCareer, MyTeam, The Park, Pro-Am and MyGM/MyLEAGUE — will no longer be available. The only mode that will still be playable is offline modes like Play Now and Blacktop.
If you have any unspent VC (Virtual Currency), you’ll want to spend it before the servers go down. VC can be used to purchase player cards in MyTeam or to upgrade your MyPlayer character in MyCareer. Once the servers are shut down, your VC will be gone for good.
2K also announced that all NBA 2K20 DLC content will be removed from digital stores on Dec. 21. This includes the LeBron James: Akron Legacy Edition and Kobe Bryant: Mamba Forever Edition bundles, as well as any standalone DLC packs like the Heat Check DLC pack orthe All-Star weekend pack. If you want to buy any of this DLC before it’s gone forever, you’ll need to do so within the next week or so.
It’s unclear why 2K is shutting down the NBA 2K20 servers less than a year after the game was released. It could be due to low player numbers or simply because 2K is preparing for the launch of NBA 2K21 (which is currently scheduled for Sept. 7, 2021). Whatever the reason, it’s a shame that players won’t be able to enjoy one of the best basketball games ever made for much longer.
