The Carolina Panthers began playing in the National Football League (NFL) in 1995. They are based in Charlotte, North Carolina, and play their home games at Bank of America Stadium. The Panthers are members of the National Football Conference (NFC) South division. Prior to joining the NFL, the Panthers competed in the World League of American Football (WLAF) and won the league championship in their first season.

City History
Founded in 1768, Charlotte was named for Queen Charlotte of Mecklenburg, who had become queen consort of Great Britain the year before. A center of the Carolina piedmont, Charlotte was the largest city in the state by 1775. During the American Revolution it became a focal point of Patriot activity, housing several military camps and munitions factories; by war’s end one-quarter of its citizens were of Scots descent. In 1785 it was made the county seat of Mecklenburg County and five years later became a borough; two years after that it was chartered as a city.
