John Madden is a former American football coach and television commentator. He played football for the University of California, Berkeley. After college, he was drafted by the NFL’s Oakland Raiders.

Pre-NFL

John Madden played American football as a linebacker for the George Washington High School in Los Angeles. He then went on to play football for the University of California, Berkeley, where he was a two-time All-American.

High School

Madden was born in Daly City, California, to Earl Clifford Madden and Mary Elizabeth (Warrilow) Madden. He went to Jefferson High School, where he played on the football team. He was selected as the Most Valuable Player on his team in his senior year. He then attended California Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo, where he played as a defensive lineman. While attending Cal Poly, he was also a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity.

College

John Madden was born in Austin, Minnesota, on April 10, 1936. He played football at Cal Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo, California. He was a two-time All-American tackle and was selected as the Outstanding Lineman of the 1957 Senior Bowl. He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1980.

NFL Career

John Madden played NFL for the Philadelphia Eagles from 1958-1959. He was drafted by the Eagles in the 5th round of the 1958 NFL Draft. He played in 11 games for the Eagles and had one interception. After his NFL career, he became a head coach.

Madden was drafted in the 21st round in 1958 by the Philadelphia Eagles. He was the second last pick overall.

Retirement

After retiring from the Raiders, Madden became a broadcaster for CBS. In three years, he became the lead commentator, working alongside Pat Summerall. He then moved to FOX in 1994. At FOX, Madden commentated for NFL games on Sundays for 17 years (through the 2010 season), as well as serving as a Super Bowl commentator six times (1986, 1987, 1996, 1998, 2002 and 2006). He worked for NBC Sports from 2006 to 2008.

Post-NFL

After winning a Super Bowl in 1974, John Madden decided to leave the NFL. He was only 32 years old at the time. While some may have thought he was too young to retire, Madden had already accomplished a lot in his short career. Madden had become a successful commentator and analyst, and he was also inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2006.
