Where Did the NFL Start?

The First Professional Football Teams

The first professional football teams were established in the late 1800s. These teams were based in large cities that could support the professional athletes and the fans who came to watch them play. The first professional teams were the Allegheny Athletic Association, the Cincinnati Celts, and the Pittsburgh Athletic Club.

In 1892, William “Pudge” Heffelfinger became the first professional football player when he was paid $500 to play for the Allegheny Athletic Association against the Pittsburgh Athletic Club.
